  1.ebb

  (formal) (of the TIDE in the sea) to move away from the land

  Synonym: GO OUT

  Antonym: FLOW

  2.petrify verb(petrifies, petrifying, petrified, petrified)

  [VN] to make sb feel extremely frightened

  Synonym: TERRIFY

  3.squirt verb

  [usually +adv./prep.]to force liquid, gas, etc. in a thin fast stream through a

  narrow opening; to be forced out of a narrow opening in this way: [VN] The snake can

  squirt poison from a distance of a metre. ◆ I desperately squirted water on the flames.

  ◆ [V] When I cut the lemon, juice squirted in my eye.

  4. Erupt verb

  when a VOLCANO erupts or burning rocks, smoke, etc. erupt or are erupted, the

  burning rocks are thrown out from the volcano: [V] The volcano could erupt at any

  time. ◆ Ash began to erupt from the crater. ◆ [VN] An immense volume of rocks and

  molten lava was erupted.

  5.migrate verb[V]

  (of birds, animals, etc.) to move from one part of the world to another according to

  the season: Swallows migrate south in winter.

  Thousands were forced to migrate from rural to urban areas in search of work.

  6.Graze verb

  (of cows, sheep, etc.) to eat grass that is growing in a field: [V] There were cows

  The field had been grazed by sheep.

  [VN] to put cows, sheep, etc. in a field so that they can eat the grass there: The land

  is used by local people to graze their animals.

  grazed my knee. ◆ He grazed his elbow on a sharp piece of rock.

  [VN] to touch sth lightly while passing it: The bullet grazed his cheek.

  7. Gasp verb

  ~ (at sth) to take a quick deep breath with your mouth open, especially because you

  are surprised or in pain: [V] She gasped at the wonderful view. ◆ They gasped in

  astonishment at the news. ◆ [V speech] 'What was that noise?' he gasped.

  ~ (sth) (out) to have difficulty breathing or speaking: [V] He came to the surface of

  the water gasping for air. ◆ [VN] She managed to gasp out her name. [also V

  speech]

  be gasping (for sth) [V] (BrE, spoken) to want or need sth very badly, especially a

  drink or a cigarette

  8.Peck verb

  ~ (at sth) (of birds) to move the beak forward quickly and hit or bite sth: [V] A robin

  was pecking at crumbs on the ground. ◆ Hens pecked around in the yard. ◆ [VN] A

  bird had pecked a hole in the sack. ◆ Vultures had pecked out the dead goat's eyes.

  [VN] ~ sb (on sth) (informal) to kiss sb lightly and quickly: He pecked her on the

  9.Trot verb(-tt-)

  [V](of a horse or its rider) to move forward at a speed that is faster than a walk and

  slower than a CANTER

  [VN] to ride a horse in this way: She trotted her pony around the field.

  [V +adv./prep.](of a person or an animal) to run or walk fast, taking short quick

  steps: The children trotted into the room.

  [V +adv./prep.](informal) to walk or go somewhere: The guide led the way and we

  trotted along behind him.

  Phrasal Verbs:trot sth<->out (informal, disapproving) to give the same excuses,

  facts, explanations, etc. for sth that have often been used before: They trotted out the

  same old excuses for the lack of jobs in the area.

  10. Spawn verb

  [V, VN](of fish, FROGS, etc.) to lay eggs

  [VN] (often disapproving) to cause sth to develop or be produced: The band's album

  spawned a string of hit singles.
