  31. Plead

  ~ (with sb) (for sth) to ask sb for sth in a very strong and serious way: [V] She

  pleaded with him not to go. ◆ I was forced to plead for my child's life. ◆ pleading eyes

  ◆ [V to inf] He pleaded to be allowed to see his mother one more time. ◆ [V speech]

  'Do something!' she pleaded.

  to state in a court of law that you are guilty or not guilty of a crime: [V-ADJ] to plead

  guilty / not guilty ◆ [V] How do you plead? (= said by the judge at the start of the trial)

  ◆ The accused was deemed unfit to plead. ◆ [VN] [no passive] He advised his

  client to plead insanity (= say that he / she was mentally ill and therefore not

  responsible for his / her actions).

  [VN] to present a case to a court of law: They hired a top lawyer to plead their case.

  ~ sth (for sth) to give sth as an explanation or excuse for sth: [VN] [no passive] He

  pleaded family problems for his lack of concentration. [also V that]

  ~ (for sb/sth) to argue in support of sb/sth: [VN] She appeared on television to

  plead the cause of political prisoners everywhere. ◆ [V] The United Nations has

  pleaded for a halt to the bombing.

  32. Flee verb

  (fled, fled into ...) (written) to leave a person or place very quickly, especially because

  you are afraid of possible danger: [V] a camp for refugees fleeing from the war ◆ He

  fled to London after an argument with his family. ◆ She burst into tears and fled. ◆

  [VN] He was caught trying to flee the country. ◆ The driver had already fled the scene

  of the accident.

  33. Defend vt. 1. to protect from attack; keep from harm or danger; 2. to support,

  maintain, or justify; 3. (law) to oppose (an action); to plead (one’s case)

  34. Proscribe verb

  [VN] (formal) to say officially that sth is forbidden: proscribed organizatio

  proscription noun [U, C]

  35. Forbid

  ~ sb (from doing sth) to order sb not to do sth; to order that sth must not be done:

  [VN] He forbade them from mentioning the subject again. ◆ Her father forbade the

  marriage. ◆ [VN to inf] You are all forbidden to leave. ◆ [VNN] My doctor has

  forbidden me sugar. [also VN -ing, V -ing]

  (formal) to make it difficult or impossible to do sth: [VN] Lack of space forbids

  further treatment of the topic here.

  36. Abstain verb[V]~ (from sth)

  to choose not to use a vote, either in favour of or against sth: Ten people voted in

  favour, five against and two abstained.

  to decide not to do sth, especially sth you like or enjoy, because it is bad for your

  health or considered morally wrong: to abstain from alcohol / sex / drugs

  37. Ban verb(-nn-) [VN]

  to forbid sth officially: Chemical weapons are banned internationally. ◆ a campaign

  to ban smoking in public places

  [usually passive]~ sb from sth / from doing sth to forbid sb to do sth, go

  somewhere, etc., especially officially: He was banned from the meeting. ◆ She's been

  banned from leaving Greece while the allegations are investigated. ◆ (BrE) He was

  banned from driving for six months.

  38. Veto verb (vetoes, vetoing, vetoed, vetoed) [VN]

  to stop sth from happening or being done by using your official authority (= by using

  your veto): Plans for the dam have been vetoed by the Environmental Protection

  Agency.

  to refuse to accept or do what sb has suggested: I wanted to go camping but the

  others quickly vetoed that idea.

  39. Revise verb

  [VN] to change your opinions or plans, for example because of sth you have learned:

  I can see I will have to revise my opinions of his abilities now. ◆ The government may

  need to revise its policy in the light of this report.

  [VN] to change sth, such as a book or an estimate, in order to correct or improve it:

  a revised edition of a textbook ◆ I'll prepare a revised estimate for you. ◆ We may

  have to revise this figure upwards.

  (BrE) to prepare for an exam by looking again at work that you have done: [V] I

  spent the weekend revising for my exam. ◆ I can't come out tonight. I have to revise.

  ◆ [VN] I'm revising Geography today.

  40. Verify verb(verifies, verifying, verified, verified)

  to check that sth is true or accurate: [VN] We have no way of verifying his story. ◆

  [V that] Please verify that there is sufficient memory available before loading the

  program. ◆ [V wh-] I'll leave you to verify whether these claims are true.

  to show or say that sth is true or accurate
