  61. Remit verb(-tt-) [VN] (formal)

  ~ sth (to sb) to send money, etc. to a person or place: to remit fees / funds ◆

  Payment will be remitted to you in full.

  to cancel or free sb from a debt, duty, punishment, etc: to remit a tax / a fine / fees

  ◆ to remit a prison sentence

  62. Absolve verb

  to state formally that sb is not guilty or responsible for sth: The court absolved him of

  all responsibility for the accident.

  to give ABSOLUTION to sb: I absolve you from all your sins.

  63. Acquit verb(-tt-) [VN]

  ~ sb (of sth) to decide and state officially in a court of law that sb is not guilty of a

  crime: The jury acquitted him of murder. ◆ Both defendants were acquitted. ◆ She

  was acquitted on all charges. ◆ He was acquitted on the grounds of insufficient

  evidence.

  Antonym: CONVICT

  ~ yourself well, badly, etc. (formal) to perform or behave well, badly, etc: He

  64. Abolish verb

  [VN] to officially end a law, a system or an institution: This tax should be abolished.

  65. Legislate verb

  something for that cough.

  68. Set verb(setting, set, set)

  [VN +adv./prep.]to put sth/sb in a particular place or position: She set a tray down

  on the table. ◆ They ate everything that was set in front of them. ◆ The house is set

  (= situated) in fifty acres of parkland.

  to cause sb/sth to be in a particular state; to start sth happening: [VN, +adv./prep.]

  Her manner immediately set everyone at their ease. ◆ He pulled the lever and set the

  machine in motion. ◆ The new leader has set the party on the road to success. ◆

  [VN-ADJ] The hijackers set the hostages free. ◆ [VN -ing] Her remarks set me

  [VN][usually passive]to place the action of a play, novel or film/movie in a

  particular place, time, etc: The novel is set in London in the 1960s.

  clock / machine

  [VN]to prepare or arrange sth so that it is ready for use or in position: She set the

  camera on automatic. ◆ I set my watch by (= make it show the same time as) the TV.

  ◆ Set the alarm for 7 o'clock.

  table

  [VN] ~ a / the table to arrange knives, forks, etc. on a table for a meal: Could you set

  the table for dinner? ◆ The table was set for six guests.

  jewellery

  [VN][usually passive]~ A in B

  ~ B with A to put a precious stone into a piece of jewellery: She had the sapphire set in

  a gold ring. ◆ Her bracelet was set with emeralds.

  arrange

  [VN] to arrange or fix sth; to decide on sth: They haven't set a date for their wedding

  yet. ◆ The government has set strict limits on public spending this year.

  [VN] to fix sth so that others copy it or try to achieve it: This could set a new fashion.

  ◆ They set high standards of customer service. ◆ I am unwilling to set a precedent. ◆

  hair

  [VN] to arrange sb's hair while it is wet so that it dries in a particular style: She had

  to gradually destroy the surface of sth through the action of wind, rain, etc.; to be

  gradually destroyed in this way

  away over time.

  (written) to gradually destroy sth or make it weaker over a period of time; to be
