  81. Kindle verb(written)

  to start burning; to make a fire start burning: [V] We watched as the fire slowly

  kindled. ◆ [VN] to kindle a fire / flame

  to make sth such as an interest, emotion, etc. start to grow in sb; to start to be felt by

  sb: [VN] It was her teacher who kindled her interest in music. ◆ [V] Suspicion kindled

  within her.

  82. Sear verb

  [VN] to burn the surface of sth in a way that is sudden and powerful: The heat of the

  sun seared their faces. ◆ spicy food that sears the mouth ◆ Sear the meat first (=

  cook the outside of it quickly at a high temperature) to retain its juices.

  (written) to cause sb to feel sudden and great pain: [V, +adv./prep.] The pain

  seared along her arm. ◆ [VN] Feelings of guilt seared him.

  83. Ignite verb

  (written) to start to burn; to make sth start to burn: [V] Gas ignites very easily. ◆

  their anger.

  84. Neutralize verb [VN]

  to stop sth from having any effect: The latest figures should neutralize the fears of

  inflation.

  85. Pollute verb

  that it is no longer pleasant or safe to use: the exhaust fumes that are polluting our

  86. Contaminate verb[VN]

  ~ sth (with sth) to make a substance or place dirty or no longer pure by adding a substance

  that is dangerous or carries disease: The drinking water has become contaminated with lead.

  ◆ contaminated blood / food / soil ◆ a river contaminated by radioactivity / pollution

  (formal) to influence people's ideas or attitudes in a bad way: They were accused of

  contaminating the minds of our young people.

  87. Balance verb

  keep steady

  ~ (sth) (on sth) to put your body or sth else into a position where it is steady and does not

  be / keep equal

  ~ (sth) (out) to be equal in value, amount, etc. to sth else that has the opposite effect

  Synonym: OFFSET

  balanced by a willingness to learn. ◆ [V] The good and bad effects of any decision will

  usually balance out.

  ~ A against B to compare the relative importance of two contrasting things: The cost of

  obtaining legal advice needs to be balanced against its benefits.

  money

  [VN](finance) to show that in an account the total money spent is equal to the total money

  received; to calculate the difference between the two totals.

  88. Initiate verb[VN]

  (formal) to make sth begin: to initiate legal action / proceedings against sb ◆ The

  government has initiated a programme of economic reform. ◆ Bacteria then enters the

  wound and initiates infection.

  ~ sb (into sth) to explain sth to sb and/or make them experience it for the first time: Many

  89. Instill VERB

  To fix (an idea, for example) in someone's mind by reemphasis and repetition:

  drill, drive, implant , impress, inculcate , pound .

  90. Instruct verb

  (formal) to tell sb to do sth, especially in a formal or official way: [VN to inf] The letter

  instructed him to report to headquarters immediately. ◆ [VN wh-] You will be instructed

  where to go as soon as the plane is ready. ◆ [VN] She arrived at 10 o'clock as instructed. ◆

  [VN] ~ sb (in sth) (formal) to teach sb sth, especially a practical skill: All our staff have been

  instructed in sign language.

  [VN, VN to inf] (law) to employ sb to represent you in a legal situation, especially as a

  lawyer
