  116. barter verb

  ~ sth (for sth)

  ~ (with sb) (for sth) to exchange goods, property, services, etc. for other goods, etc. without

  using money: [VN] The local people bartered wheat for farm machinery. ◆ [V] The prisoners

  tried to barter with the guards for items like writing paper and books.

  117. Purchase verb

  [VN] ~ sth (from sb) (formal or written) to buy sth: The equipment can be purchased from

  your local supplier. ◆ They purchased the land for $1 million. ◆ Please ensure that you

  purchase your ticket in advance. ◆ (figurative) Victory was purchased (= achieved) at too

  great a price.

  118. Deposit verb[VN]

  put down

  [+adv./prep.]to put or lay sb/sth down in a particular place: She deposited a pile of books

  on my desk. ◆ (informal) I was whisked off in a taxi and deposited outside the hotel.

  leave substance

  (especially of a river or a liquid) to leave a layer of sth on the surface of sth, especially

  gradually and over a period of time: Sand was deposited which hardened into sandstone.

  money

  to put money into a bank account: Millions were deposited in Swiss bank accounts.

  to pay a sum of money as the first part of a larger payment; to pay a sum of money that you

  will get back if you return in good condition sth that you have rented

  put in safe place

  ~ sth (in sth)

  ~ sth (with sb/sth) to put sth valuable or important in a place where it will be safe: Guests

  may deposit their valuables in the hotel safe.

  119. Toll verb

  when a bell tolls or sb tolls it, it is rung slowly many times, especially as a sign that sb has died:

  [V] The Abbey bell tolled for those killed in the war. ◆ Ask not for whom the bell tolls; it tolls

  for thee. ◆ [VN] The bell tolled the hour. ◆ (figurative) The revolution tolled the death knell

  (= signalled the end) for the Russian monarchy.

  money

  ~ (sb/sth) for sth

  ~ (sb) sth (for sth) to ask an amount of money for goods or a service: [VN] What did they

  charge for the repairs? ◆ The restaurant charged £ 20 for dinner. ◆ We won't charge you for

  delivery. ◆ They're charging £ 3 for the catalogue. ◆ Calls are charged at 36p per minute. ◆

  [VNN] He only charged me half price. ◆ [V] Do you think museums should charge for

  admission? [also V to inf, VN to inf]

  [VN] ~ sth to sth to record the cost of sth as an amount that sb has to pay: They charge the

  calls to their credit-card account. ◆ ( AmE) Don't worry. I'll charge it (= pay by credit card).

  with crime / sth wrong

  [VN] ~ sb (with sth / with doing sth) to accuse sb formally of a crime so that there can be a

  trial in a court of law: He was charged with murder. ◆ Several people were arrested but

  nobody was charged.

  [VN]~ sb (with sth / with doing sth) (formal) to accuse sb publicly of doing sth wrong or

  bad: Opposition MPs charged the minister with neglecting her duty.

  rush / attack

  to rush forward and attack sb/sth: [V] The bull put its head down and charged. ◆ We

  charged at the enemy. [also VN]

  [V +adv./prep.]to rush in a particular direction: The children charged down the stairs. ◆

  He came charging into my room and demanded to know what was going on.

  with responsibility / task

  [VN] (usually passive) ~ sb with sth (formal) to give sb a responsibility or task: The

  committee has been charged with the development of sport in the region. ◆ The governing

  body is charged with managing the school within its budget.

  with electricity

  [VN]~ (sth) (up) to pass electricity through sth so that it is stored there: Before use, the

  battery must be charged. ◆ The shaver can be charged up and used when travelling.

  with strong feeling

  [VN](usually passive) ~ sth (with sth) (written) to fill sb with an emotion: The room was

  charged with hatred. ◆ a highly charged atmosphere

  glass

  [VN] (BrE, formal) to fill a glass: Please charge your glasses and drink a toast to the bride

  and groom!

  gun

  [VN] (old use) to load a gun
