  131. Extinguish verb[VN]

  to make a fire stop burning or a light stop shining

  Synonym: PUT OUT

  Firefighters tried to extinguish the flames. ◆ (formal) All lights had been extinguished.

  to destroy sth: News of the bombing extinguished all hope of peace.

  132. Absorb verb[VN]

  liquid / gas

  to take in a liquid, gas or other substance from the surface or space around: Plants absorb

  oxygen. ◆ The cream is easily absorbed into the skin. ◆ Let the rice cook until it has

  absorbed all the water.

  make part of sth larger

  [often passive]to make sth smaller become part of sth larger: The surrounding small

  towns have been absorbed into the city. ◆ The country simply cannot absorb this influx of

  refugees.

  information

  to take sth into the mind and learn or understand it: It's a lot of information to absorb all at

  once. ◆ It took me several days to absorb the fact of her death. ◆ They spent a week in Paris

  just absorbing the atmosphere.

  to interest sb very much so that they pay no attention to anything else: This work had

  absorbed him for several years.

  to take in and keep heat, light, energy, etc. instead of reflecting it: Black walls absorb a lot

  134. Siege

  surrounded by an army or the police in a siege: The city was under siege for six months.

  being criticized all the time or put under pressure by problems, questions, etc: The

  government is already under siege for its economic policy.

  lay siege to sth

  to begin a siege of a town, building, etc: The crusaders laid siege to Lisbon.

  to surround a building, especially in order to speak to or question the person or people living

  or working there: Crowds of journalists laid siege to the star's apartment.

  135. Envelop verb

  [VN] ~ sb/sth (in sth) (formal) to wrap sb/sth up or cover them or it completely: She was

  enveloped in a huge white towel. ◆ Clouds enveloped the mountain tops. ◆ Darkness fell

  and enveloped the town. ◆ A feeling of despair enveloped him.
