  136. Beset verb

  (besetting, beset, beset) [VN] [usually passive] (formal) to affect sb/sth in an unpleasant

  or harmful way: The team had been beset by injury all season. ◆ It's one of the most difficult

  problems besetting our modern way of life. ◆ a life beset with financial worries

  137. Besiege verb[VN]

  to surround a building, city, etc. with soldiers until the people inside are forced to let you in:

  Paris was besieged for four months and forced to surrender. ◆ (figurative) Fans besieged the

  box office to try and get tickets for the concert.

  [usually passive](especially of sth unpleasant or annoying) to surround sb/sth in large

  numbers: The actress was besieged by reporters at the airport.

  ~ sb (with sth) to send so many letters, ask so many questions, etc. that it is difficult for sb

  to deal with them all: The radio station was besieged with calls from angry listeners.

  138. Unearth verb[VN]

  to find sth in the ground by digging

  Synonym: DIG UP

  to unearth buried treasures ◆ Police have unearthed a human skeleton.

  to find or discover sth by chance or after searching for it

  Synonym: DIG UP

  I unearthed my old diaries when we moved house. ◆ The newspaper has unearthed some

  disturbing facts.

  139. Scoop verb[VN]

  [usually +adv./prep.]~ sth (up) to move or lift sth with a scoop or sth like a scoop: She

  scooped ice cream into their bowls. ◆ He quickly scooped the money up from the desk. ◆

  First, scoop a hole in the soil. ◆ Scoop out the melon flesh.

  [+adv./prep.]~ sb/sth (up) to move or lift sb/sth with a quick continuous movement: She

  scooped the child up in her arms. ◆ He quickly scooped his clothes from the chair.

  to publish a story before all the other newspapers, television companies, etc: The paper had

  inside information and scooped all its rivals.

  (informal) to win sth, especially a large sum of money or a prize: He scooped £10 000 on

  the lottery. ◆ Last year, the programme scooped the Best Drama award.

  140. Exhume verb

  [VN][usually passive](formal) to remove a dead body from the ground especially in order

  to examine how the person died: The body was exhumed on the order of the judge.

  exhumation noun [U]: A committee was appointed to supervise the exhumation and

  identification of the bodies.
