  161. Exist verb[V]

  (not used in the progressive tenses) to be real; to be present in a place or situation: Does

  life exist on other planets? ◆ The problem only exists in your head, Jane. ◆ Few of these

  monkeys still exist in the wild. ◆ A temple existed here hundreds of years ago.

  ~ (on sth) to live, especially in a difficult situation or with very little money: We existed on a

  diet of rice and very little else. ◆ They can't exist on the money he's earning.

  162. Secrete verb [VN]

  (of part of the body or a plant) to produce a liquid substance: Insulin is secreted by the

  pancreas.

  ~ sth (in sth) (formal) to hide sth, especially sth small: The drugs were secreted in the lining

  of his case.

  163. Assimilate verb

  [VN] to fully understand an idea or some information so that you are able to use it yourself:

  The committee will need time to assimilate this report. ◆ Some people can only assimilate

  change gradually.

  ~ (sb) (into / to sth) to become, or allow sb to become, a part of a country or community

  rather than remaining in a separate group: [V] New arrivals find it hard to assimilate, and may

  not wish to. ◆ [VN] Immigrants have been successfully assimilated into the community.

  [VN][often passive]~ sth into / to sth to make an idea, a person's attitude, etc. fit into

  sth or be acceptable: These changes were gradually assimilated into everyday life.

  164. Rank verb(not used in the progressive tenses)

  give position

  ~ (sb) (as sth) to give sb/sth a particular position on a scale according to quality,

  importance, success, etc.; to have a position of this kind: [VN] The tasks have been ranked in

  order of difficulty. ◆ She is currently the highest ranked player in the world. ◆ top-ranked

  players ◆ Voters regularly rank education as being more important than defence. ◆

  [VN-ADJ] Last year, he was ranked second in his age group. ◆ [V-ADJ] At the height of her

  career she ranked second in the world. ◆ [VN-N] The university is ranked number one in the

  country for engineering. ◆ [V] [often +adv./prep.] The restaurant ranks among the finest

  [VN][usually passive]to arrange objects in a line or row

  165. Circulate verb

  when a liquid, gas, or air circulates or is circulated, it moves continuously around a place or

  system: [V] The condition prevents the blood from circulating freely. ◆ [VN] Cooled air is

  circulated throughout the building.

  if a story, an idea, information, etc. circulates or if you circulate it, it spreads or it is passed

  from one person to another: [V] Rumours began to circulate about his financial problems.

  [VN] ~ sth (to sb) to send goods or information to all the people in a group: The document

  will be circulated to all members.

  [V]to move around a group, especially at a party, talking to different people
