　　166. Intersect verb

　　(of lines, roads, etc.) to meet or cross each other: [V] a pattern of intersecting streets ◆

　　The lines intersect at right angles. ◆ The path intersected with a busy road. [also VN]

　　[VN][usually passive]~ sth (with sth) to divide an area by crossing it: The landscape is

　　intersected with spectacular gorges.

　　167. Parallel verb[VN] (written)

　　to be similar to sth; to happen at the same time as sth: Their legal system parallels our own.

　　◆ The rise in unemployment is paralleled by an increase in petty crime.

　　to be as good as sth: a level of achievement that has never been paralleled

　　168. Estimate verb[often passive]~ sth (at sth) to form an idea of the cost, size,

　　value etc. of sth, but without calculating it exactly: [VN] The satellite will cost an estimated

　　£400 million. ◆ Police estimate the crowd at 30 000. ◆ [VN to inf] The deal is estimated to

　　be worth around $1.5 million. ◆ [V (that)] We estimated (that) it would cost about £ 4 000.

　　◆ [VN (that)] It is estimated (that) the project will last four years. ◆ [V wh-] It is hard to

　　estimate how many children suffer from dyslexia.

　　169. Calculate verb

　　to use numbers to find out a total number, amount, distance, etc: [VN] Use the formula to

　　calculate the volume of the container. ◆ Benefit is calculated on the basis of average weekly

　　earnings. ◆ We haven't really calculated the cost of the vacation yet. ◆ [V wh-] You'll need

　　to calculate how much time the assignment will take. ◆ [VN that] It has been calculated that

　　at least 47 000 jobs were lost last year.

　　to guess sth or form an opinion by using all the information available: [V that]

　　Conservationists calculate that hundreds of species could be lost in this area. ◆ [V wh-] It is

　　impossible to calculate what influence he had on her life.

　　170. Enumerate verb

　　[VN] (formal) to name things on a list one by one: She enumerated the main points. ◆ Let me

　　enumerate the benefits for you.
