　　171. Evaluate verb

　　to form an opinion of the amount, value or quality of sth after thinking about it carefully

　　Synonym: ASSESS

　　[VN] Our research attempts to evaluate the effectiveness of the different drugs. ◆ [V wh-]

　　We need to evaluate how well the policy is working.

　　evaluation noun [C, U]: a preliminary evaluation of the health care system

　　172. Subtract verb

　　[VN] ~ sth (from sth) to take a number or an amount away from another number or amount:

　　subtracted from 9 is 3 (69=3)

　　Antonym: ADD

　　subtraction -compare ADDITION noun [U, C]

　　173. Divide verb

　　separate

　　~ (sth) (up) (into sth) to separate or make sth separate into parts: [V] The cells began to

　　divide rapidly. ◆ [VN] A sentence can be divided up into meaningful segments.

　　[VN] ~ sth (up / out) (between / among sb) to separate sth into parts and give a share to

　　each of a number of different people, etc: Jack divided up the rest of the cash. ◆ We divided

　　the work between us.

　　[VN] ~ sth (between A and B) to use different parts of your time, energy, etc. for different

　　activities, etc: He divides his energies between politics and business.

　　[VN] ~ A from B (formal) to separate two people or things: Can it ever be right to divide a

　　mother from her child?

　　[VN] ~ sth (off)

　　~ A from B to be the real or imaginary line or barrier that separates two people or things: A

　　fence divides off the western side of the grounds. ◆ The English Channel divides England

　　from France.

　　cause disagreement

　　[VN] to make two or more people disagree: The issue has divided the government. ◆ The

　　government is divided on this issue. ◆ a divided society

　　mathematics

　　[VN]~ sth by sth to find out how many times one number is contained in another:

　　divided by 6 is 5 (30 6 = 5).

　　[VN] ~ into sth to be able to be multiplied to give another number: divides into 30 6

　　times.

　　174. Revolve verb

　　[V]to go in a circle around a central point: The fan revolved slowly. ◆ The earth revolves on

　　its axis.

　　Phrasal Verbs:revolve around / round sth to move around sth in a circle: The earth revolves

　　around the sun.

　　revolve around / round sb/sth to have sb/sth as the main interest or subject: His whole life

　　revolves around surfing. ◆ She thinks that the world revolves around her. ◆ The discussion

　　revolved around the question of changing the club's name.

　　175. Land verb

　　of bird / plane / insect

　　[V] to come down through the air onto the ground or another surface: The plane landed

　　safely. ◆ A fly landed on his nose.

　　Antonym: TAKE OFF

　　of pilot

　　[VN]to bring a plane down to the ground in a controlled way: The pilot landed the plane

　　safely.

　　arrive in plane / boat

　　[V]to arrive somewhere in a plane or a boat: We shall be landing shortly. Please fasten your

　　seatbelts. ◆ The troops landed at dawn. ◆ They were the first men to land on the moon. ◆

　　The ferry is due to land at 3 o'clock.

　　[VN] to put sb/sth on land from an aircraft, a boat, etc: The troops were landed by

　　helicopter.

　　fall to ground

　　[V]to come down to the ground after jumping, falling or being thrown: I fell and landed

　　heavily at the bottom of the stairs. ◆ A large stone landed right beside him.

　　difficulties

　　[V +adv./prep.]to arrive somewhere and cause difficulties that have to be dealt with:

　　Why do complaints always land on my desk (= why do I always have to deal with them)?

　　job

　　(informal) to succeed in getting a job, etc., especially one that a lot of other people want:

　　[VN] He's just landed a starring role in Spielberg's next movie. ◆ [VNN] She's just landed

　　herself a company directorship.

　　fish

　　[VN] to catch a fish and bring it out of the water on to the land
