  176. Release verb[VN]

  set sb / sth free

  ~ sb/sth (from sth) to let sb/sth come out of a place where they have been kept or trapped:

  to release a prisoner / hostage ◆ Firefighters took two hours to release the driver from the

  wreckage. ◆ (figurative) Death released him from his suffering.

  stop holding sth

  to stop holding sth or stop it from being held so that it can move, fly, fall, etc. freely: He

  refused to release her arm. ◆ 10 000 balloons were released at the ceremony. ◆ Intense

  heat is released in the reaction.

  feelings

  to express feelings such as anger or worry in order to get rid of them: She burst into tears,

  releasing all her pent-up emotions.

  free sb from duty

  ~ sb (from sth) to free sb from a duty, responsibility, contract, etc: The club is releasing

  some of its older players. ◆ The new law released employers from their obligation to

  recognize unions.

  part of machine

  to remove sth from a fixed position, allowing sth else to move or function: to release the

  clutch / handbrake / switch

  make less tight

  to make sth less tight: You need to release the tension in these shoulder muscles.

  make available

  to make sth available to the public: Police have released no further details about the

  accident. ◆ to release a movie / book / CD ◆ new products released onto the market

  to make sth available that had previously been restricted: The new building programme will

  go ahead as soon as the government releases the funds.

  177. Precipitate verb[VN] (formal)

  to make sth, especially sth bad, happen suddenly or sooner than it should: His resignation

  precipitated a leadership crisis.

  ~ sb/sth into sth to suddenly force sb/sth into a particular state or condition: The

  assassination of the president precipitated the country into war.

  178. Expedite verb

  [VN] (formal) to make a process happen more quickly

  Synonym: SPEED UP

  We have developed rapid order processing to expedite deliveries to customers.

  179. Quiver verb[V]to shake slightly; to make a slight movement

  Synonym: TREMBLE

  Her lip quivered and then she started to cry. ◆ The memory of that day made him quiver with

  anger.

  180. Jar verb(-rr-)

  ~ (sth) (on sth) to give or receive a sudden sharp painful knock: [VN] The jolt seemed to

  jar every bone in her body. ◆ [V] The spade jarred on something metal.

  ~ (on sth) to have an unpleasant or annoying effect: [V] His constant moaning was

  beginning to jar on her nerves. ◆ There was a jarring note of triumph in his voice. [also VN]

  [V]~ (with sth) to be different from sth in a strange or unpleasant way

  Synonym: CLASH

  Her brown shoes jarred with the rest of the outfit. ◆ The only jarring note was the cheap

  modern furniture.
