  226. Affiliate verb

  [VN][usually passive]~ sb/sth (with / to sb/sth) to link a group, a company, or an

  organization very closely with another larger one: The group is not affiliated to any political

  party. ◆ The hospital is affiliated with the local university.

  ~ (yourself) (with sb/sth) to join, to be connected with, or to work for an organization: [VN]

  The majority of people questioned affiliated themselves with a religious group. ◆ The doctors

  are affiliated with the Relief Fund. [also V]

  227. Govern verb

  to legally control a country or its people and be responsible for introducing new laws,

  organizing public services, etc: [VN] The country is governed by elected representatives of

  the people. ◆ [V] He accused the opposition party of being unfit to govern.

  [VN][often passive]to control or influence sb/sth or how sth happens, functions, etc:

  Prices are very much governed by market demand. ◆ All his decisions have been entirely

  governed by self-interest. ◆ We need changes in the law governing school attendance.

  228. Confer verb(-rr-) (formal)

  [V]~ (with sb) (on / about sth) to discuss sth with sb, especially in order to exchange

  opinions or get advice: He wanted to confer with his colleagues before reaching a decision.

  [VN] ~ sth (on / upon sb) to give sb an award, a university degree or a particular honour or

  right: An honorary degree was conferred on him by Oxford University in 1995.

  229. Exploit verb[VN]

  (disapproving) to treat a person or situation as an opportunity to gain an advantage for

  yourself: He exploited his father's name to get himself a job. ◆ She realized that her youth

  and inexperience were being exploited. ◆ The opposition parties will always exploit

  government problems to their own advantage.

  (disapproving) to treat sb unfairly by making them work and not giving them much in return:

  What is being done to stop employers from exploiting young people?

  to use sth well in order to gain as much from it as possible: She fully exploits the humour of

  her role in the play. ◆ Teachers should be exploiting computers in education.

  ~ sth (for sth) to develop or use sth for business or industry: countries exploiting the
