　　256. Shell verb

　　to fire shells at sth: [VN] They shelled the city all night. ◆ [V] Just as they were leaving the

　　rebels started shelling.

　　[VN] to remove the shell or covering from nuts, peas, etc: shelled prawns / shrimp

　　257. Consecrate verb

　　[VN] to state officially in a religious ceremony that sth is holy and can be used for religious

　　purposes: The church was consecrated in 1853. ◆ consecrated ground

　　[VN] (in Christian belief) to make bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ

　　~ sb (as) (sth) to state officially in a religious ceremony that sb is now a priest, etc: [VN-N]

　　He was consecrated (as) bishop last year. [also VN]

　　[VN] ~ sth/sb / yourself to sth (formal) to give sth/sb or yourself to a special purpose,

　　especially a religious one: She consecrated her life to God.

　　consecration noun [C, U]: the consecration of a church / bishop

　　258. Destine Verb :To determine the future of in advance:

　　fate , foreordain, predestinate, predestine, predetermine, preordain.

　　259. Immerse verb[VN]

　　~ sb/sth (in sth) to put sb/sth into a liquid so that they or it are completely covered: The

　　seeds will swell when immersed in water.

　　~ yourself / sb in sth to become or make sb completely involved in sth: She immersed

　　herself in her work. ◆ Clare and Phil were immersed in conversation in the corner.

　　260. Invoke verb[VN] (formal)

　　~ sth (against sb) to mention or use a law, rule, etc. as a reason for doing sth: It is unlikely

　　that libel laws will be invoked.

　　to mention a person, a theory, an example, etc. to support your opinions or ideas, or as a

　　reason for sth: She invoked several eminent scholars to back up her argument.

　　to mention sb's name to make people feel a particular thing or act in a particular way: His

　　name was invoked as a symbol of the revolution.

　　to make a request (for help) to sb, especially a god

　　to make sb have a particular feeling or imagine a particular scene

　　Synonym: EVOKE

　　The opening paragraph invokes a vision of England in the early Middle Ages.

　　Help Note:Some people think this use is not correct.

　　to use or apply sth: He frequently invokes animal metaphors in his poetry.

　　(computing) to begin to run a program, etc: This command will invoke the HELP system.

　　to make evil appear by using magic
