　　276. Compare verb

　　(abbreviation cf., cp.) [VN] ~ A and B

　　~ A with / to B to examine people or things to see how they are similar and how they are

　　different: It is interesting to compare their situation and ours. ◆ We compared the two

　　reports carefully. ◆ We carefully compared the first report with the second. ◆ My own

　　problems seem insignificant compared with other people's. ◆ Standards in health care have

　　improved enormously compared to 40 years ago.

　　[V]~ with / to sb/sth to be similar to sb/sth else, either better or worse: This school

　　compares with the best in the country (= it is as good as them). ◆ This house doesn't

　　compare with our previous one (= it is not as good). ◆ I've had some difficulties, but they

　　were nothing compared to yours (= they were not nearly as bad as yours). ◆ Their prices

　　compare favourably with those of their competitors.

　　[VN] ~ A to B to show or state that sb/sth is similar to sb/sth else: The critics compared his

　　work to that of Martin Amis.

　　277. Copy verb (copies, copying, copied, copied)

　　[VN] to make sth that is exactly like sth else: They copied the designs from those on Greek

　　vases. ◆ Everything in the computer's memory can be copied onto diskettes.

　　[VN] ~ sth (from sth) (into / onto sth)

　　~ sth (down / out) to write sth exactly as it is written somewhere else: She copied the phone

　　number into her address book. ◆ I copied out several poems.

　　[VN] to behave or do sth in the same way as sb else

　　Synonym: IMITATE

　　She copies everything her sister does. ◆ Their tactics have been copied by other terrorist

　　organizations.

　　[V] ~ (from / off sb) to cheat in an exam, school work, etc. by writing what sb else has

　　written and pretending it is your own work

　　[VN] (especially AmE) = PHOTOCOPY

　　278. Imitate verb[VN]

　　to copy sb/sth: Her style of painting has been imitated by other artists. ◆ Art imitates

　　Nature. ◆ Teachers provide a model for children to imitate. ◆ No computer can imitate the

　　complex functions of the human brain.

　　to copy the way a person speaks or behaves, in order to amuse people

　　Synonym: MIMIC

　　She knew that the girls used to imitate her and laugh at her behind her back.

　　279. Resemble VN][no passive](not used in the progressive tenses) to look like or be

　　similar to another person or thing: She closely resembles her sister. ◆ So many hotels

　　resemble each other. ◆ The plant resembles grass in appearance.

　　280. Exclude verb [VN]

　　~ sth (from sth) to deliberately not include sth in what you are doing or considering: The

　　cost of borrowing has been excluded from the inflation figures. ◆ Try excluding sugar and fat

　　from your diet. ◆ Buses run every hour, Sundays excluded.

　　Antonym: INCLUDE

　　~ sb/sth (from sth) to prevent sb/sth from entering a place or taking part in sth: Women are

　　still excluded from some London clubs. ◆ (BrE) Concern is growing over the number of

　　children excluded from school (= forbidden to attend because of bad behaviour). ◆ She felt

　　excluded by the other girls (= they did not let her join in what they were doing).

　　to decide that sth is not possible: We should not exclude the possibility of negotiation. ◆

　　The police have excluded theft as a motive for the murder.
