  296. Brighten verb

  to become or make sth lighter or brighter in colour: [V] In the distance, the sky was

  beginning to brighten. ◆ [VN] a shampoo to brighten and condition your hair

  ~ (sth) (up) to become, feel or look happier; to make sb look happier: [V] Her eyes

  brightened. ◆ He brightened up at their words of encouragement. ◆ [VN] A smile

  brightened her face.

  ~ (sth) (up) to become or make sth become more pleasant, enjoyable or hopeful: [VN] A

  personal letter will usually brighten up a person's day. [also V]

  [VN] ~ sth (up) to make sth look more colourful and attractive: Fresh flowers will brighten

  up any room in the house.

  [V]~ (up) (of the weather) to improve and become brighter: According to the forecast, it

  should brighten up later.

  297. Gleam verb

  [V] to shine with a pale clear light: The moonlight gleamed on the water. ◆ Her eyes

  gleamed in the dark.

  ~ (with sth) to look very clean or bright: [V] The house was gleaming with fresh white paint.

  ◆ [V-ADJ] Her teeth gleamed white against the tanned skin of her face.

  [V]~ (with / in sth) if a person's eyes gleam with a particular emotion, or an emotion

  gleams in a person's eyes, the person shows that emotion: His eyes gleamed with amusement.

  ◆ Amusement gleamed in his eyes.

  298. Twinkle verb[V]

  to shine with a light that keeps changing from bright to faint to bright again: Stars twinkled

  in the sky. ◆ twinkling lights in the distance

  ~ (with sth)

  ~ (at sb) if your eyes twinkle, you have a bright expression because you are happy or excited:

  twinkling blue eyes ◆ Her eyes twinkled with merriment. ◆ His mother twinkled at him over

  her teacup.

  299. Invent verb [VN]

  to produce or design sth that has not existed before: Who invented the steam engine? ◆ I

  wish mobile phones had never been invented! DISCOVER

  to say or describe sth that is not true, especially in order to deceive people: What excuse did

  he invent this time? ◆ Many children invent an imaginary friend.

  300. Dissect verb[VN]

  to cut up a dead person, animal or plant in order to study it: The biology students had to

  dissect a rat. ◆ dissecting instruments

  to study sth closely and/or discuss it in great detail: Her latest novel was dissected by the

  critics.

  to divide sth into smaller pieces, areas, etc: The city is dissected by a network of old canals.

  dissection noun [U, C]: anatomical dissection ◆ Your enjoyment of a novel can suffer from

  too much analysis and dissection.
