　　301. Contrive verb(formal)

　　[V to inf] to manage to do sth in spite of difficulties: She contrived to spend a couple of

　　hours with him every Sunday evening. ◆ Somehow they contrived to live on her tiny incom e

　　[VN] to succeed in making sth happen in spite of difficulties: I decided to contrive a meeting

　　between the two of them.

　　[VN]to think of or make sth, for example a plan or a machine, in a clever way: They

　　contrived a plan to defraud the company.

　　302. Launch verb[VN]

　　to start an activity, especially an organized one: to launch an appeal / an inquiry / an

　　investigation / a campaign ◆ to launch an attack / invasion

　　to make a product available to the public for the first time: a party to launch his latest novel

　　◆ The new model will be launched in July.

　　to put a ship or boat into the water, especially one that has just been built: The Navy is to

　　launch a new warship today. ◆ The lifeboat was launched immediately.

　　to send sth such as a spacecraft, weapon, etc. into space, into the sky or through water: to

　　launch a communications satellite ◆ to launch a missile / rocket / torpedo

　　~ yourself at, from, etc. sth

　　~ yourself forwards, etc. to jump forwards with a lot of force: Without warning he launched

　　himself at me. ◆ (figurative) She launched herself on the rock world with a brilliant album.

　　303. Devise verb

　　[VN] to invent sth new or a new way of doing sth

　　Synonym: THINK UP

　　A new system has been devised to control traffic in the city.

　　304. Gauge verb

　　to make a judgement about sth, especially people's feelings or attitudes: [VN] They

　　interviewed employees to gauge their reaction to the changes. ◆ He tried to gauge her mood.

　　◆ [V wh-] It was difficult to gauge whether she was angry or not.

　　[VN]to measure sth accurately using a special instrument: precision instruments that can

　　gauge the diameter to a fraction of a millimetre

　　to calculate sth approximately: [VN] We were able to gauge the strength of the wind from

　　the movement of the trees. ◆ It is impossible to gauge the extent of the damage. [also V

　　wh-]

　　305. Presume verb

　　to suppose that sth is true, although you do not have actual proof

　　Synonym: ASSUME

　　[V]They are very expensive, I presume? ◆ 'Is he still abroad?' 'I presume so.' ◆ [V (that)]

　　I presumed (that) he understood the rules. ◆ [VN that] Little is known of the youngest son;

　　it is presumed that he died young. ◆ [VN to inf] I presumed him to be her husband.

　　to accept that sth is true until it is shown not to be true, especially in a court of law:

　　[VN-ADJ] Twelve passengers are missing, presumed dead. ◆ In English law, a person is

　　presumed innocent until proved guilty. ◆ [VN] We must presume innocence until we have

　　proof of guilt. [also VN to inf]

　　[VN] (formal) to accept sth as true or existing and to act on that basis

　　Synonym: PRESUPPOSE

　　The course seems to presume some previous knowledge of the subject.

　　[V to inf] (formal) to behave in a way that shows a lack of respect by doing sth that you

　　have no right to do: I wouldn't presume to tell you how to run your own business.

　　Phrasal Verbs:presume on / upon sb/sth (formal) to make use of sb's friendship by asking

　　them for more than you should: [+ to inf] I felt it would be presuming on our personal

　　relationship to keep asking her for help
