  306. Generalize verb

  [V] ~ (from sth) to use a particular set of facts or ideas in order to form an opinion that is

  considered valid for a different situation: It would be foolish to generalize from a single

  example.

  [V]~ (about sth) to make a general statement about sth and not look at the details: It is

  dangerous to generalize about the poor.

  [VN][often passive]~ sth (to sth) (formal) to apply a theory, idea, etc. to a wider group

  or situation than the original one: These conclusions cannot be generalized to the whole

  country. ◆ We are now in a position to generalize the lessons we have learnt.

  1.To draw an inference on the basis of inconclusive evidence or insufficient information:

  conjecture , guess , infer , speculate , surmise.

  demonstrate convincingly that our campaign is working. ◆ [VN] Let me demonstrate to you

  some of the difficulties we are facing. ◆ [V wh-] His sudden departure had demonstrated

  how unreliable he was. ◆ [VN to inf] The theories were demonstrated to be false. ◆ [VN

  that] It has been demonstrated that this drug is effective.

  [VN] to show by your actions that you have a particular quality, feeling or opinion

  Synonym: DISPLAY

  You need to demonstrate more self-control. ◆ We want to demonstrate our commitment to

  human rights.

  ~ sth (to sb) to show and explain how sth works or how to do sth: [VN] Her job involves

  demonstrating new educational software. [also V wh-]

  [V]~ (against sth)

  ~ in favour / support of sth) to take part in a public meeting or march, usually as a protest or

  to show support for sth

  Synonym: PROTEST

  students demonstrating against the war ◆ They are demonstrating in favour of free higher

  education.
