  311. Elapse verb

  [V](not usually used in the progressive tenses) (formal) if a period of time elapses, it passes:

  Many years elapsed before they met again.

  312. Concur

  1. to occur at the same time; coincide; 2. to act together; 3. to agree; to be in accord

  The phases of the moon and the changes in the oceans ’ tides have been known to concur.

  Two persons must concur in the direction of their motion to operate a two-handled tree saw.

  For the Supreme Court to come to a decision, five justices must concur.

  313. Improvise verb

  to make or do sth using whatever is available, usually because you do not have what you

  really need: [V] There isn't much equipment. We're going to have to improvise. ◆ [VN] We

  improvised some shelves out of planks of wood and bricks.

  ~ (on sth) to invent music, the words in a play, a statement, etc. while you are playing or

  speaking, instead of planning it in advance: [V] 'It'll be ready some time next week, I expect,'

  she said, improvising. ◆ He improvised on the melody. ◆ [VN] an improvised response /

  speech

  314. Synchronize verb

  ~ (sth) (with sth) to happen at the same time or to move at the same speed as sth; to make

  sth do this: [V] The sound track did not synchronize with the action. ◆ [VN] Let's

  synchronize our watches (= make them show exactly the same time).

  315. Drift verb

  move slowly

  [V][usually +adv./prep.]to move along smoothly and slowly in water or air: Clouds

  drifted across the sky. ◆ The empty boat drifted out to sea. ◆ A cool breeze drifted through

  the open window. ◆ Smoke drifted across the room.

  [V +adv./prep.]to move or go somewhere slowly: The crowd drifted away from the scene

  of the accident. ◆ Her gaze drifted around the room. ◆ People began to drift back to their

  houses.

  without purpose

  [V][usually +adv./prep.]to happen or change or to do sth without a particular plan or

  purpose: I didn't intend to be a teacher-I just drifted into it. ◆ He hasn't decided what to do

  yet-he's just drifting. ◆ The conversation drifted onto politics.

  into state / situation

  [V]~ in / into sth to go from one situation or state to another without realizing it: Finally she

  drifted into sleep. ◆ The injured man tried to speak but soon drifted into unconsciousness.

  of snow / sand

  [V]to be blown into large piles by the wind: drifting sand ◆ Some roads are closed because

  of drifting.

  float

  [VN] to make sth float somewhere: The logs are drifted downstream to the mill.

  Phrasal Verbs:drift apart to become less friendly or close to sb: As children we were very

  close, but as we grew up we just drifted apart.

  drift off (to sleep) to fall asleep: I didn't hear the storm, I must have drifted off by then.
