  341. Brew verb

  to make beer: [VN] The beer is brewed in the Czech Republic. [also V]

  [VN] to make a hot drink of tea or coffee: freshly brewed coffee

  [V](especially BrE) (of tea or coffee) to mix with hot water and become ready to drink:

  Always let tea brew for a few minutes.

  [V] ~ (up) (usually used in the progressive tenses) if sth unpleasant is brewing or brewing

  up, it seems likely to happen soon: Trouble has been brewing for some time now. ◆ A storm

  was brewing up out at sea.

  342. Beguile verb[VN](formal)

  ~ sb (into doing sth) to trick sb into doing sth, especially by being nice to them: She

  beguiled them into believing her version of events.

  to attract or interest sb: He was beguiled by her beauty. ◆ The tapestries continue to

  beguile all those who visit the cathedral.

  to make time pass pleasantly by doing sth enjoyable: They sang songs to beguile the long

  winter evenings.

  343. Despoil verb

  [VN] ~ sth (of sth) (literary) to steal sth valuable from a place; to make a place less attractive

  by damaging or destroying it

  344. Forge verb

  [VN] to put a lot of effort into making sth successful or strong so that it will last: a move to

  forge new links between management and workers ◆ Strategic alliances are being forged

  with major European companies. ◆ She forged a new career in the music business. ◆ They

  forged a lead in the first 30 minutes of the game.

  [VN] to make an illegal copy of sth in order to deceive people: to forge a passport /

  banknote / cheque ◆ He's getting good at forging his mother's signature.

  Compare:COUNTERFEIT

  [VN] to shape metal by heating it in a fire and hitting it with a hammer; to make an object in

  this way: swords forged from steel

  [V +adv./prep.](written) to move forward in a steady but powerful way: He forged

  through the crowds to the front of the stage. ◆ She forged into the lead (= in a competition,

  race, etc.).

  345. Assassinate verb

  [VN][often passive]to murder an important or famous person, especially for political

  reasons: The prime minister was assassinated by extremists. ◆ a plot to assassinate the

  president

  assassination noun [U, C]: The president survived a number of assassination attempts. ◆ the

  assassination of John F. Kennedy
