  351. Defraud verb

  ~ sb (of sth) to get money illegally from a person or an organization by tricking them: [VN]

  They were accused of defrauding the company of $14 000. ◆ [V] All three men were charged

  with conspiracy to defraud.

  352. Fabricate verb[VN][often passive]

  to invent false information in order to deceive people: The evidence was totally fabricated.

  ◆ The prisoner claimed the police had fabricated his confession.

  (technical) to make or produce goods, equipment, etc. from various different materials

  Synonym: MANUFACTURE

  fabrication noun [C, U]: Her story was a complete fabrication from start to finish.

  353. Purge verb[VN]

  ~ sth (of sb)

  ~ sb (from sth) to remove people from an organization, often violently, because their opinions

  or activities are unacceptable to the people in power: His first act as leader was to purge the

  party of extremists. ◆ He purged extremists from the party.

  ~ yourself / sb/sth (of sth)

  ~ sth (from sth) (written) to make yourself/sb/sth pure, healthy or clean by getting rid of bad

  thoughts or feelings: We need to purge our sport of racism. ◆ Nothing could purge the guilt

  from her mind.

  354. Belie verb(belies, belying, belied, belied) [VN] (formal)

  to give a false impression of sb/sth: Her energy and youthful good looks belie her 65 years.

  to show that sth cannot be true or correct: Government claims that there is no poverty are

  belied by the number of homeless people on the streets.

  355. Trap verb(-pp-) [VN]

  in dangerous / bad situation

  [often passive]to keep sb in a dangerous place or bad situation that they want to get out

  of but cannot: Help! I'm trapped! ◆ They were trapped in the burning building. ◆ We

  became trapped by the rising flood water. ◆ He was trapped in an unhappy marriage. ◆ I feel

  trapped in my job.

  part of body / clothing

  [usually +adv./prep.]to have part of your body, your clothing, etc. held in a place so

  tightly that you cannot remove it and it may be injured or damaged: I trapped my coat in the

  car door. ◆ The pain was caused by a trapped nerve.

  catch

  to catch or keep sth in a place and prevent it from escaping, especially so that you can use

  it: Solar panels trap energy from the sun.

  to force sb/sth into a place or situation that they cannot escape from, especially in order to

  catch them: The escaped prisoners were eventually trapped in an underground garage and

  recaptured. ◆ Police believe the fingerprints could help trap the killer.

  to catch an animal in a trap: Raccoons used to be trapped for their fur.

  trick

  ~ sb (into sth / into doing sth) to trick sb into sth: He felt he had been trapped into

  accepting the terms of the contract. ◆ The police managed to trap him into revealing his true identity.
