  361. Squeeze verb

  press with fingers

  to press sth firmly, especially with your fingers: [VN] to squeeze a tube of toothpaste ◆ to

  squeeze the trigger of a gun (= to fire it) ◆ He squeezed her hand and smiled at her. ◆ [V]

  Just take hold of the tube and squeeze.

  get liquid out

  ~ sth (out of / from sth)

  ~ sth (out) to get liquid out of sth by pressing or twisting it hard: [VN] to squeeze the juice

  from a lemon ◆ He took off his wet clothes and squeezed the water out. ◆ freshly squeezed

  orange juice ◆ (figurative) She felt as if every drop of emotion had been squeezed from her.

  into / through small space

  ~ (sb/sth) into, through, etc. sth

  ~ through, in, past, etc. to force sb/sth/yourself into or through a small space: [VN] We

  managed to squeeze six people into the car. ◆ It's a pretty town, squeezed between the

  mountains and the ocean. ◆ (figurative) We managed to squeeze a lot into a week (= we did

  a lot of different things). ◆ [V] to squeeze into a tight dress / a parking space ◆ to squeeze

  threaten

  [VN] ~ sb (for sth) (informal) to get sth by putting pressure on sb, threatening them, etc:

  He's squeezing me for £400.

  limit money

  [VN] to strictly limit or reduce the amount of money that sb/sth had or can use: High

  interest rates have squeezed the industry hard. ◆ The banks have had their profits squeezed

  this year.

  362. Prune verb[VN] ~ sth (back)

  to cut off some of the branches from a tree, bush, etc. so that it will grow better and

  stronger: When should you prune apple trees? ◆ He pruned the longer branches off the tree.

  ◆ The hedge needs pruning back.

  to make sth smaller by removing parts; to cut out parts of sth: Staff numbers have been

  pruned back to 175. ◆ The railway companies have pruned their timetables (= there are

  fewer trains). ◆ Prune out any unnecessary details.

  pruning noun [U]: All roses require annual pruning. ◆ The company would benefit from a

  little pruning here and there.

  363. Glaze verb

  [V]~ (over) if a person's eyes glaze or glaze over, the person begins to look bored or tired:

  A lot of people's eyes glaze over if you say you are a feminist. ◆ 'I'm feeling rather tired,' he

  said, his eyes glazing.

  [VN] to fit sheets of glass into sth: to glaze a window / house ◆ a glazed door

  attach

  arrange

  [VN] to decide on a date, time, amount, etc. for sth

  Synonym: SET

  Has the date of the next meeting been fixed? ◆ They fixed the rent at £100 a week. ◆ Their

  prices are fixed until the end of the year (= will not change before then).

  ~ sth (up) (for sb) to arrange or organize sth: [VN] I'll fix a meeting. ◆ You have to fix

  visits up in advance with the museum. ◆ How are you fixed (= do you have any plans) for

  Thursday? ◆ (informal) Don't worry, I'll fix it with Sarah. ◆ [V to inf] I've fixed up (for us) to

  go to the theatre next week.

  position / time

  [VN]to discover or say the exact position, time, etc. of sth: We can fix the ship's exact

  position at the time the fire broke out.

  food / drink

  ~ sth (for sb)

  ~ sb sth (especially AmE) to provide or prepare sth, especially food: [VNN, VN] Can I fix you

  a drink? ◆ Can I fix a drink for you? ◆ [VN] I'll fix supper.

  repair

  [VN] to repair or correct sth: The car won't start-can you fix it? ◆ I've fixed the problem.

  hair / face

  [VN] (especially AmE) to make sth such as your hair or face neat and attractive: I'll fix my

  hair and then I'll be ready.

  result

  [VN] (informal) [often passive] to arrange the result of sth in a way that is not honest or

  fair: I'm sure the race was fixed.

  punish

  [VN] (informal) to punish sb who has harmed you and stop them doing you any more harm:

  Don't worry-I'll fix him.

  in photography

  [VN] (technical) to treat photographic film, etc. with a chemical so that the colours do not

  change or become less bright
