  366. Maintain verb

  [VN] to make sth continue at the same level, standard, etc.

  Synonym: PRESERVE

  to maintain law and order / standards / a balance ◆ The two countries have always

  maintained close relations. ◆ (formal) She maintained a dignified silence. ◆ to maintain

  prices (= prevent them falling or rising)

  [VN] to keep a building, a machine, etc. in good condition by checking or repairing it

  regularly: The house is large and difficult to maintain.

  to keep stating that sth is true, even though other people do not agree or do not believe it:

  [V (that)] The men maintained (that) they were out of the country when the crime was

  committed. ◆ [VN] She has always maintained her innocence. [also V speech]

  [VN] to support sb/sth financially over a long period of time

  367. Flay verb[VN]

  to remove the skin from an animal or person, usually when they are dead

  to hit or whip sb very hard so that some of their skin comes off

  (formal) to criticize sb/yourself severely: He flayed himself for his lack of tact. ◆ Her dark

  eyes flayed him.

  368. Flush verb

  (of a person or their face) to become red, especially because you are embarrassed, excited

  or hot: [V] She flushed with anger. ◆ [V-ADJ] Sam felt her cheeks flush red. [also VN]

  [V, VN]when a toilet flushes or you flush it, water passes through it to clean it, after a

  handle, etc. has been pressed

  [VN] ~ sth out (with sth)

  ~ sth through sth to clean sth by causing water to pass through it: Flush the pipe out with

  clean water. ◆ Flush clean water through the pipe.

  [VN +adv./prep.]to get rid of sth with a sudden flow of water: They flushed the drugs

  down the toilet. ◆ Drinking lots of water will help to flush toxins out of the body. ◆ Gallons of

  toxic waste were flushed into the sea.

  flush sb/sth<->out to force a person or an animal to leave the place where they are hiding

  369. Clinch verb[VN]

  to succeed in achieving or winning sth: to clinch an argument / a deal / a victory ◆ They

  clinched a place in the semi-finals.

  to provide the answer to sth; to settle sth that was not certain: 'I'll pay your air fare.' 'Okay,

  that clinches it-I'll come with you.' ◆ a clinching argument

  370. Gild verb

  [VN] (literary) to make sth look bright, as if covered with gold: The golden light gilded the sea .
