  411. Correlate verb

  [V]if two or more facts, figures, etc. correlate or if a fact, figure, etc. correlates with another,

  the facts are closely connected and affect or depend on each other: The figures do not seem

  to correlate. ◆ A high-fat diet correlates with a greater risk of heart disease.

  [VN] to show that there is a close connection between two or more facts, figures, etc:

  Researchers are trying to correlate the two sets of figures.

  412. Grant verb

  [often passive]~ sth (to sb/sth)

  ~ (sb) sth to agree to give sb what they ask for, especially formal or legal permission to do sth:

  [VN, VNN] The bank finally granted a £ 400 loan to me. ◆ The bank finally granted me a

  £400 loan. ◆ [VN] My request was granted. ◆ These lands had been granted to the family in

  perpetuity. ◆ [VNN] I was granted permission to visit the palace. ◆ She was granted a

  divorce. ◆ He was granted a licence to mine in the area.

  to admit that sth is true, although you may not like or agree with it: [VN] She's a smart

  woman, I grant you, but she's no genius. ◆ [VN (that)] I grant you (that) it looks good, but

  it's not exactly practical.

  413. Sway verb

  [usually +adv./prep.]to move slowly from side to side; to move sth in this way: [V] The

  branches were swaying in the wind. ◆ Vicky swayed and fell. ◆ [VN] They danced

  rhythmically, swaying their hips to the music.

  [VN][often passive]to persuade sb to believe sth or do sth

  Synonym: INFLUENCE

  He's easily swayed. ◆ She wasn't swayed by his good looks or his clever talk

  414. Affect verb

  [VN][often passive]to produce a change in sb/sth

  Synonym: INFLUENCE

  How will these changes affect us? ◆ Your opinion will not affect my decision. ◆ The south of

  the country was worst affected by the drought.

  [VN][often passive](of a disease) to attack sb or a part of the body; to make sb become

  ill/sick

  Synonym: AFFLICT

  The condition affects one in five women. ◆ Rub the cream into the affected areas.

  [VN][often passive]to make sb have strong feelings of sadness, pity, etc.

  Synonym: TOUCH, MOVE

  They were deeply affected by the news of her death. ◆ Try not to let his problems affect you

  too much.

  (formal) to pretend to be feeling or thinking sth: [VN] She affected a calmness she did not

  feel. [also V to inf]

  [VN] (formal, disapproving) to use or wear sth that is intended to impress other people

  Synonym: PUT ON

  I wish he wouldn't affect that ridiculous accent.

  415. Flounder verb

  to struggle to know what to say or do or how to continue with sth: [V] His abrupt change of

  subject left her floundering helplessly. [also V speech]

  [V] to have a lot of problems and to be in danger of failing completely: At that time the

  industry was floundering. ◆ The new democracy there continues to flounder.

  [V][usually +adv./prep.]to struggle to move or get somewhere in water, mud, etc: She

  was floundering around in the deep end of the swimming pool. ◆ A man came floundering

  through the snow towards us.
