  441. Leap verb

  (leapt, leapt ) or (leaped, leaped)

  to jump high or a long way: [V, +adv./prep.] A dolphin leapt out of the water. ◆ We leapt

  over the stream. ◆ [VN] The horse leapt a five-foot wall.

  [V +adv./prep.]to move or do sth suddenly and quickly: She leapt out of bed. ◆ He leapt

  across the room to answer the door. ◆ I leapt to my feet (= stood up quickly). ◆ They leapt

  into action immediately. ◆ (figurative) She was quick to leap to my defence (= speak in

  support of me). ◆ The photo seemed to leap off the page (= it got your attention

  immediately). ◆ His name leapt out at me (= I saw it immediately).

  [V]to increase suddenly and by a large amount: Shares leapt in value from 476p to close at

  536p.

  442. Bow verb

  [V]~ (down) (to / before sb/sth) to move your head or the top half of your body forwards

  and downwards as a sign of respect or as a greeting: He bowed low to the assembled crowd.

  ◆ The people all bowed down before the Emperor.

  [VN] to move your head forwards and downwards: She bowed her head in shame. ◆ They

  stood in silence with their heads bowed.

  to bend or make sth bend: [V] The pines bowed in the wind. ◆ [VN] Their backs were

  bowed under the weight of their packs.

  443. Blink verb

  when you blink or blink your eyes or your eyes blink, you shut and open your eyes quickly:

  [V] He blinked in the bright sunlight. ◆ Lucy blinked at him in astonishment. ◆ I'll be back

  before you can blink (= very quickly). ◆ When I told him the news he didn't even blink (=

  showed no surprise at all). [also VN]

  Compare:WINK

  [V]to shine with an unsteady light; to flash on and off: Suddenly a warning light blinked.

  Phrasal Verbs:blink sth<->away / back to try to control tears or clear your eyes by blinking:

  She bravely blinked back her tears.

  444. Erect verb[VN] (formal)

  to build sth: The church was erected in 1582. ◆ to erect a wall / monument / statue

  to put sth in position and make it stand upright

  Synonym: PUT STH UP

  Police had to erect barriers to keep crowds back. ◆ to erect a tent / sign

  to create or establish sth: to erect trade barriers

  445. Trample verb

  ~ sb/sth (down)

  ~ on / over sth to step heavily on sb/sth so that you crush or harm them/it with your feet:

  [VN] People were trampled underfoot in the rush for the exit. ◆ He was trampled to death (=

  killed) by a runaway horse. ◆ The campers had trampled the corn down. ◆ [V] Don't trample

  on the flowers!

  ~ (on / over) sb/sth to ignore sb's feelings or rights and treat them as if they are not

  important: [V] The government is trampling on the views of ordinary people. ◆ She would

  not let him trample over her any longer. [also VN]
