  451. Creep verb (crept, crept [prep.]

  (of people or animals) to move slowly, quietly and carefully, because you do not want to be

  seen or heard: I crept up the stairs, trying not to wake my parents. ◆ I heard someone

  creeping around the house.

  ( AmE) to move with your body close to the ground; to move slowly on your hands and

  knees

  Synonym: CRAWL

  to move or develop very slowly: A slight feeling of suspicion crept over me.

  (of plants) to grow along the ground or up walls using long stems or roots

  ~ (to sb) (BrE, informal, disapproving) to be too friendly or helpful to sb in authority in a

  way that is not sincere, especially in order to get an advantage from them

  452. Limp verb[V]

  to walk slowly or with difficulty because one leg is injured: She had twisted her ankle and

  was limping. ◆ Matt limped painfully off the field.

  [+adv./prep.]to move slowly or with difficulty after being damaged: The plane limped

  back to the airport. ◆ (figurative) The government was limping along in its usual way.

  453. Sign verb

  [V]~ (with sth) to take and then let out a long deep breath that can be heard, to show that

  you are disappointed, sad, tired, etc: He sighed deeply at the thought. ◆ She sighed with

  relief that it was all over.

  [V speech] to say sth with a sigh: 'Oh well, better luck next time,' she sighed.

  [V](literary) (especially of the wind) to make a long sound like a sigh: the sighing of the

  wind through the trees ◆ branches sighing in the wind

  454. Recoil verb[V]

  ~ (from sb/sth)

  ~ (at sth) (written) to move your body quickly away from sb/sth because you find them or it

  frightening or unpleasant: She recoiled from his touch. ◆ He recoiled in horror at the sight of

  the corpse.

  ~ (from sth / from doing sth)

  ~ (at sth) (written) to react to an idea or a situation with strong dislike or fear: She recoiled

  from the idea of betraying her own brother.

  (of a gun) to move suddenly backwards when you fire it

  455. Uphold verb[VN]

  to support sth that you think is right, fair, etc. and make sure that it continues to exist: We

  have a duty to uphold the law. ◆ The regime has been criticized for failing to uphold human

  rights.

  (especially of a court of law) to agree that a previous decision was correct or that a request

  is reasonable: to uphold a conviction / an appeal / a complaint ◆ The Press Council refused to

  uphold the complaint.
