  471. Mine verb

  to dig holes in the ground in order to find and obtain coal, diamonds, etc: [VN] The area

  They were mining for gold.

  [VN] to place mines below the surface of an area of land or water; to destroy a vehicle with

  mines: The coastal route had been mined. ◆ The UN convoy was mined on its way to the

  472. Monitor verb

  to watch and check sth over a period of time in order to see how it develops, so that you can

  Synonym: ACT

  The doctor behaved very unprofessionally. ◆ They behaved very badly towards their guests.

  / though nothing had happened. ◆ They behave differently when you're not around.

  Help Note:In spoken English people often use like instead of as if or as though, especially in

  AmE: He behaved like nothing had happened. This is considered incorrect in written BrE.

  ~ (yourself) to do things in a way that people think is correct or polite: [V] Will you kids just

  behave! ◆ She doesn't know how to behave in public. ◆ The children always behave for their

  father. ◆ [VN] I want you to behave yourselves while I'm away.

  (-behaved) (in adjectives) behaving in the way mentioned: well- / badly-behaved children

  475. Raise verb

  move upwards
