  506. Startle verb

  to surprise sb suddenly in a way that slightly shocks or frightens them: [VN] I didn't mean to

  startle you. ◆ The explosion startled the horse. ◆ I was startled by her question. ◆ [VN to

  inf] It startled me to find her sitting in my office.

  startled adjective: She looked at him with startled eyes. ◆ He looked startled. ◆ She jumped

  back like a startled rabbit.

  507. Stun verb(-nn-) [VN]

  to make a person or an animal unconscious for a short time, especially by hitting them on

  the head: The fall stunned me for a moment. ◆ The animals are stunned before slaughter.

  to surprise or shock sb so much that they cannot think clearly or speak: Her words stunned

  me-I had no idea she felt that way.

  to impress sb very much: They were stunned by the view from the summit.

  stunned adjective: She was too stunned to speak. ◆ There was a stunned silence when I told

  them the news.

  508. Dismay verb[VN]

  to make sb feel shocked and disappointed: Their reaction dismayed him.

  dismayed adjective ~ (at / by sth)

  ~ to find, hear, see, etc.: He was dismayed at the change in his old friend. ◆ The suggestion

  was greeted by a dismayed silence. ◆ They were dismayed to find that the ferry had already

  left.

  509. Intrude verb[V]

  ~ (into / on / upon sb/sth) to go or be somewhere where you are not wanted or are not

  supposed to be: I'm sorry to intrude, but I need to talk to someone. ◆ legislation to stop

  newspapers from intruding on people's private lives

  ~ (on / into upon sth) to disturb sth or have an unpleasant effect on it: The sound of the

  telephone intruded into his dreams.

  510. Chafe verb

  if skin chafes, or if sth chafes it, it becomes sore because the thing is rubbing against it: [V]

  Her wrists chafed where the rope had been. ◆ [VN] The collar was far too tight and chafed

  her neck.

  [V]~ (at / under sth) (formal) to feel annoyed and impatient about sth, especially because

  it limits what you can do: He soon chafed at the restrictions of his situation. ◆ Young people

  often go through a phase of chafing under parental control.
