　　546. Profane verb[VN](rare, formal) to treat sth holy with a lack of respect

　　547. Flatter verb

　　[VN] to say nice things about sb, often in a way that is not sincere, because you want them

　　to do sth for you or you want to please them: Are you trying to flatter me?

　　~ yourself to choose to believe sth good about yourself and your abilities, especially when

　　other people do not share this opinion: [VN] 'How will you manage without me?' 'Don't flatter

　　yourself.' [also VN (that)]

　　[VN] to make sb seem more attractive or better then they really are: That colour doesn't

　　flatter many people. ◆ The scoreline flattered England (= they did not deserve to get such a

　　high score).

　　548. Begrudge verb(often used in negative sentences)

　　to feel unhappy that sb has sth because you do not think that they deserve it: [VNN] You

　　surely don't begrudge him his happiness. ◆ [VN -ing] I don't begrudge her being so

　　successful.

　　to feel unhappy about having to do, pay or give sth: [VN] I begrudge every second I spent

　　trying to help him. ◆ [V -ing] Many people begrudge paying so much money for a

　　second-rate service.

　　549. Halt verb

　　to stop; to make sb/sth stop: [V] She walked towards him and then halted. ◆ 'Halt!' the

　　Major ordered (= used as a command to soldiers). ◆ [VN] The police were halting traffic on

　　the parade route. ◆ The trial was halted after the first week.

　　550. Scruple verb[V to inf](not scruple to do sth) (formal)

　　to be willing to do sth even if it might be wrong or immoral
