  551. Demur verb

  (-rr-) (formal) to say that you do not agree with sth or that you refuse to do sth: [V] At firstshe demurred, but then finally agreed. [also V speech]

  552. Hesitate verb

   (about / over sth) to be slow to speak or act because you feel uncertain or nervous: [V]

  She hesitated before replying. ◆ I didn't hesitate for a moment about taking the job. ◆ He

  seemed to hesitate a second. ◆ She stood there, hesitating over whether or not to tell himthe truth. [also V speech]

  [V to inf] to be worried about doing sth, especially because you are not sure that it is right or appropriate: Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries. ◆ If you'd like me to send you the book, then please don't hesitate to ask.

  hesitation noun [U, C] : She agreed without the slightest hesitation. ◆ We were trained to speak fluently and without unnecessary hesitations.

  553. Doubt verb to feel uncertain about sth; to feel that sth is not true, will probably not happen, etc: There seems no reason to doubt her story. ◆ 'Do you think England will win?'-'I doubt it.' ◆ [V(that)] I never doubted (that) she would come. ◆ [V wh-] I doubt whether / if the new one will be any better.

  [VN] to not trust sb/sth; to not believe sb: I had no reason to doubt him.

  doubter noun

  554. Suspect verb(not used in the progressive tenses) to have an idea that sth is probably true or likely to happen, especially sth bad, but without

  having definite proof: [VN] If you suspect a gas leak, do not strike a match or even turn on an electric light. ◆ Suspecting nothing, he walked right into the trap. ◆ I didn't want the neighbours suspecting anything. ◆ [V (that)] I began to suspect (that) they were trying to get rid of me. ◆ I suspect (that) she might be lying. ◆ [V] As I had suspected all along, he was not a real policeman. [also VN to inf, VN that][VN] to be suspicious about sth; to not trust sth: I suspected her motives in offering to help.

  [VN]~ sb (of sth / of doing sth) to have an idea that sb is guilty of sth, without having definite proof: He resigned after being suspected of theft. ◆ I suspected her of damaging the equipment. ◆ The drug is suspected of causing over 200 deaths. ◆ Whom do the police suspect?

  555. Loathe verb

  (not used in the progressive tenses) to dislike sb/sth very much: [VN] I loathe modern art. ◆

  They loathe each other. [also V -ing]
