  576. Defend verb

  protect against attack

  ~ (sb / yourself / sth) (from / against sb/sth) to protect sb/sth from attack: [VN] All our officers are trained to defend themselves against knife attacks.

◆ Troops have been sent to defend the borders.

◆ The male ape defends his females from other males.

◆ [V] It is impossible to defend against an all-out attack.

  support

  578. Safeguard verb

  ~ sth (against / from sth)

  ~ against sth (formal) to protect sth from loss, harm or damage; to keep sth safe: [VN] to safeguard sb's interests / rights / privacy

◆ to safeguard jobs / the environment

◆ The new card will safeguard the company against fraud.

◆ [V] The leaflet explains how to safeguard against dangers in the home.

  579. Dissipate verb(formal)

  to gradually become or make sth become weaker until it disappears: [V] Eventually, his anger dissipated.

  [VN] to waste sth, such as time or money, especially by not planning the best way of using it

  580. Deal VERB:

  1.To give out in portions or shares. Also used with out:

  dispense, distribute, divide, dole out, parcel out, portion (out), ration (out), share. Slang :divvy .
