  581. Tackle verb

  [VN] to make a determined effort to deal with a difficult problem or situation: The government is determined to tackle inflation.

◆ I think I'll tackle the repairs next weekend.

◆ Firefighters tackled a blaze in a garage last night.

  [VN] ~ sb (about sth) to speak to sb about a problem or difficult situation

Synonym: CONFRONT

  I tackled him about the money he owed me.

  (in football, hockey, etc.) to try and take the ball from an opponent: [VN] He was tackled just outside the penalty area. [also V]

  [V, VN](in rugby or American football) to make an opponent fall to the ground in order to stop them running

  [VN] to deal with sb who is violent or threatening you: He tackled a masked intruder at his home.

  582. Discard verb

  [VN] ~ sb/sth (as sth) to get rid of sth that you no longer want or need

  Synonym: CAST ASIDE

  The room was littered with discarded newspapers.

  584. Harness verb[VN]

  ~ sth (to sth) to put a harness on a horse or other animal; to attach a horse or other animal to sth with a harness: to harness a horse

◆ We harnessed two ponies to the cart.

◆ (figurative) In some areas, the poor feel harnessed to their jobs.

  to control and use the force or strength of sth to produce power or to achieve sth: attempts

  to harness the sun's rays as a source of energy

  585. Reject verb[VN]

  to refuse to accept or consider sth: to reject an argument / a claim / a decision / an offer /a suggestion

  new organ

  (of the body) to not accept a new organ after a TRANSPLANT operation, by producing substances that attack the organ: Her body has already rejected two kidneys.

  to fail to give a person or an animal enough care or affection: The lioness rejected the smallest cub, which died.
