  591. Effectuate VERB:

  1.To be the cause of:

  bring , bring about , bring on, cause , effect , generate, induce , ingenerate , lead to, make,

  occasion, result in, secure , set off , stir¹ (up), touch off , trigger .

  Idioms: bring to pass (or effect) , give rise to.

  2.To bring about and carry to a successful conclusion:

  bring off , carry out, carry through , effect, execute, put through . Informal : swing.

  592. Glean verb

  [VN] ~ sth (from sb/sth) to obtain information, knowledge etc., sometimes with difficulty and

  often from various different places: These figures have been gleaned from a number of

  studies.

  593. Purge verb[VN]

  ~ sth (of sb)

  ~ sb (from sth) to remove people from an organization, often violently, because their opinions

  or activities are unacceptable to the people in power: His first act as leader was to purge the

  party of extremists. ◆ He purged extremists from the party.

  ~ yourself / sb/sth (of sth)

  ~ sth (from sth) (written) to make yourself/sb/sth pure, healthy or clean by getting rid of bad

  thoughts or feelings: We need to purge our sport of racism. ◆ Nothing could purge the guilt

  594. Erase verb[VN]

  ~ sth (from sth) to remove sth completely: She tried to erase the memory of that evening.

  ◆ All doubts were suddenly erased from his mind. ◆ You cannot erase injustice from the

  world.

  to make a mark or sth you have written disappear, for example by rubbing it, especially in

  order to correct it: He had erased the wrong word. ◆ All the phone numbers had been erased.

  ◆ The tide had erased the footprints.

  to remove a recording from a tape or information from a computer's memory: Parts of the

  recording have been erased. ◆ He had erased more than 5 000 files from the memory of his

  computer.

  595. Eradicate verb

  [VN] ~ sth (from sth) to destroy or get rid of sth completely, especially sth bad: Polio has been

  virtually eradicated in Brazil. ◆ We are determined to eradicate racism from our sport.
