　　611. Incite verb

　　~ sb (to sth)

　　~ sth to encourage sb to do sth violent, illegal or unpleasant, especially by making them angry

　　or excited: [VN] to incite crime / racial hatred / violence ◆ They were accused of inciting the

　　crowd to violence. ◆ [VN to inf] He incited the workforce to come out on strike.

　　612. Gain verb

　　obtain / win

　　to obtain or win sth, especially sth that you need or want: [VN] to gain entrance / entry /

　　access to sth ◆ The country gained its independence ten years ago. ◆ The party gained over

　　50% of the vote. ◆ I gained an insight into the work of a journalist. ◆ He has gained a

　　reputation for unpredictable behaviour. ◆ [VNN] Her unusual talent gained her worldwide

　　recognition.

　　~ (sth) (by / from sth) to obtain an advantage or benefit from sth or from doing sth: [VN]

　　There is nothing to be gained from delaying the decision. ◆ [V] Who stands to gain from this

　　decision?

　　[VN] to gradually get more of sth: to gain confidence / strength / experience ◆ I've gained

　　weight recently.

　　of watch / clock

　　to go too fast: [VN] My watch gains two minutes every 24 hours. [also V]

　　Antonym: LOSE

　　613. Obtain verb (formal)

　　[VN] (rather formal) to get sth, especially by making an effort: to obtain advice /

　　information / permission ◆ I finally managed to obtain a copy of the report. ◆ Further details

　　can be obtained by writing to the above address. ◆ To obtain the overall score, add up the

　　totals in each column.

　　[V](not used in the progressive tenses) (formal) (of rules, systems, customs, etc.) to exist:

　　614. Seize verb[VN]

　　~ sth (from sb) to take sb/sth in your hand suddenly and using force

　　Synonym: GRAB

　　She tried to seize the gun from him. ◆ He seized her by the arm. ◆ She seized hold of my

　　hand.

　　~ sth (from sb) to take control of a place or situation, often suddenly and violently: They

　　seized the airport in a surprise attack. ◆ The army has seized control of the country. ◆ He

　　seized power in a military coup.

　　to arrest or capture sb: The men were seized as they left the building.

　　to take illegal or stolen goods away from sb: A large quantity of drugs was seized during the

　　raid.

　　~ a chance, an opportunity, the initiative, etc. to be quick to make use of a chance, an

　　opportunity, etc.

　　615. Redeem verb[VN]

　　to make sb/sth seem less bad

　　Synonym: COMPENSATE FOR

　　The excellent acting wasn't enough to redeem a weak plot. ◆ The only redeeming feature of

　　the job (= good thing about it) is the salary. ◆ She seems to have no redeeming qualities (=

　　good aspects of her character) at all.

　　~ yourself to do sth to improve the opinion that people have of you, especially after you

　　have done sth bad: He has a chance to redeem himself after last week's mistakes.

　　(in Christianity) to save sb from the power of evil: Jesus Christ came to redeem us from sin.

　　to pay the full sum of money that you owe sb; to pay a debt: to redeem a loan / mortgage

　　to exchange sth such as shares or VOUCHERS for money or goods: This voucher can be

　　redeemed at any of our branches.

　　to get back a valuable object from sb by paying them back the money you borrowed from

　　them in exchange for the object: He was able to redeem his watch from the pawnshop.

　　(formal) ~ a pledge / promise to do what you have promised to do
