  616. Procure verb

  ~ sth (for sth) (formal) to obtain sth, especially with difficulty: [VN] She managed to

  procure a ticket for the concert. ◆ [VNN, VN] They procured us a copy of the report. ◆ They

  procured a copy of the report for us.

  to provide a prostitute for sb: [VN] He was accused of procuring under-age girls. [also V]

  617. Acquire verb[VN](formal)

  to gain sth by your own efforts, ability or behaviour: She has acquired a good knowledge of

  English. ◆ How long will it take to acquire the necessary skills? ◆ He has acquired a

  reputation for dishonesty. ◆ I have recently acquired a taste for olives.

  to obtain sth by buying or being given it: The company has just acquired new premises. ◆

  How did the gallery come to acquire so many Picassos? ◆ I've suddenly acquired a

  stepbrother.

  618. Elude verb[VN]

  to manage to avoid or escape from sb/sth, especially in a clever way: The two men

  managed to elude the police for six weeks.

  if sth eludes you, you are not able to achieve it, or not able to remember or understand it:

  He was extremely tired but sleep eluded him. ◆ They're a popular band but chart success has

  eluded them so far. ◆ Finally he remembered the tiny detail that had eluded him the night

  before.

  619. Escape verb

  [V]~ (from sb/sth) to get away from a place where you have been kept as a prisoner or not

  allowed to leave: Two prisoners have escaped. ◆ He escaped from prison this morning. ◆

  They were caught trying to escape.

  ~ (from sth) to get away from an unpleasant or dangerous situation: [V] She managed to

  escape from the burning car. ◆ (figurative) As a child he would often escape into a dream

  world of his own. ◆ [VN] They were glad to have escaped the clutches of winter for another

  year.

  [no passive]to avoid sth unpleasant or dangerous: [VN] She was lucky to escape

  punishment. ◆ The pilot escaped death by seconds. ◆ There was no escaping the fact that

  he was overweight. ◆ [V -ing] He narrowly escaped being killed.

  ~ (with sth) to suffer no harm or less harm than you would expect: [V] I was lucky to

  escape with minor injuries. ◆ [V-ADJ] Both drivers escaped unhurt.

  [VN][no passive]to be forgotten or not noticed: Her name escapes me (= I can't

  remember it). ◆ It might have escaped your notice, but I'm very busy at the moment.

  [V](of gases, liquids, etc.) to get out of a container, especially through a hole or crack: Put

  a lid on to prevent heat escaping. ◆ toxic waste escaping into the sea

  (of a sound) to come out from your mouth without you intending it to: [VN] A groan

  escaped her lips.

  620. Shun verb

  (-nn-) [VN] (written) to avoid sb/sth: She was shunned by her family when she remarried. ◆

  an actor who shuns publicity
