  631. Plot verb(-tt-)

  ~ (with sb) (against sb) to make a secret plan to harm sb, especially a government or its

  leader: [V] They were accused of plotting against the state. ◆ [VN] Military officers were

  suspected of plotting a coup. ◆ She spends every waking hour plotting her revenge. ◆ [V to

  inf] They were plotting to overthrow the government.

  [VN]~ sth (on sth) to mark sth on a map, for example the position or course of sth: The

  earthquake centres had been plotted on a world map. ◆ He plotted a new route across the

  Atlantic.

  [VN] ~ sth (on sth) to make a diagram or CHART from some information: We carefully

  plotted each patient's response to the drug on a chart.

  [VN] ~ sth (on sth) to mark points on a GRAPH and draw a line or curve connecting them:

  First, plot the temperature curve on the graph.

  [VN] to write the plot of a novel, play, etc: a tightly-plotted thriller

  632. Overturn verb

  if sth overturns, or if sb overturns it, it turns upside down or on its side: [V] The car skidded

  and overturned. ◆ [VN] He stood up quickly, overturning his chair.

  [VN] to officially decide that a legal decision etc. is not correct, and to make it no longer

  valid: to overturn a decision / conviction / verdict ◆ His sentence was overturned by the

  appeal court.

  633. Decline verb

  [V]to become smaller, fewer, weaker, etc: Support for the party continues to decline. ◆ The

  number of tourists to the resort declined by 10% last year. ◆ Her health was declining rapidly.

  (formal) to refuse politely to accept or to do sth: [V] I offered to give them a lift but they

  declined. ◆ [VN] to decline an offer / invitation ◆ She declined a second glass of wine and

  called for a taxi. ◆ [V to inf] Their spokesman declined to comment on the allegations.

  [V, VN](grammar) if a noun, an adjective or a pronoun declines, it has different forms

  according to whether it is the subject or the object a verb, whether it is in the singular or plural,

  etc. When you decline a noun, etc., you list these forms.

  634. Relinquish verb

  [VN] ~ sth (to sb) (formal) to stop having sth, especially when this happens unwillingly: He

  was forced to relinquish control of the company. ◆ They had relinquished all hope that she

  was alive. ◆ She relinquished possession of the house to her sister. ◆ I relinquished her hand

  (= stopped holding it) and stood up.

  635. Renounce verb [VN] (formal)

  to state officially that you are no longer going to keep a title, position, etc.

  Synonym: GIVE UP

  to renounce a claim / title / privilege / right ◆ to renounce your citizenship ◆ Will Charles

  renounce the throne in favour of his son?

  to state publicly that you no longer have a particular belief or that you will no longer behave

  in a particular way: to renounce ideals / principles / beliefs ◆ to renounce terrorism / war ◆

  a joint declaration renouncing the use of violence ◆ Many were executed for refusing to

  renounce their religion.

  to state publicly that you no longer wish to have a connection with sb/sth because you

  disapprove of them: He had renounced his former associates.
