　　636. Gainsay verb (gainsays )

　　[VN] (formal) (often used in negative sentences) to say that sth is not true; to disagree with

　　or deny sth: Nobody can gainsay his claims.

　　637. Declaim verb

　　(formal) to say sth loudly; to speak loudly and forcefully about sth you feel strongly about,

　　especially in public: [VN] She declaimed the famous opening speech of the play. ◆ [V] He

　　declaimed against the evils of alcohol. [also V speech, V that]

　　638. Submit verb(-tt-)

　　[VN] ~ sth (to sb/sth) to give a document, proposal, etc. to sb in authority so that they can

　　study or consider it: to submit an application / a claim / a complaint ◆ Completed projects

　　must be submitted by 10 March.

　　~ (yourself) (to sb/sth) to accept the authority, control or greater strength of sb/sth; to

　　agree to sth because of this

　　Synonym: YIELD, GIVE IN TO SB/STH

　　She refused to submit to threats. ◆ He submitted himself to a search by the guards.

　　[V that](law or formal) to say or suggest sth: Counsel for the defence submitted that the

　　evidence was inadmissible.

　　639. Succumb verb

　　[V]~ (to sth) to fail to resist an attack, an illness, a TEMPTATION, etc: The town succumbed

　　after a short siege. ◆ His career was cut short when he succumbed to cancer. ◆ He finally

　　succumbed to Lucy's charms and agreed to her request. ◆ She succumbed to the temptation

　　of another drink. ◆ They were all offered bribes and some of them succumbed.

　　640. Enthrall VERB:

　　1.To act upon with or as if with magic:

　　bewitch, charm , enchant, entrance², spell², spellbind, voodoo , witch.

　　See PERSUASION.

　　2.To make subservient or subordinate:

　　enslave, subject , subjugate.

　　See FREE.

　　3.To compel, as the attention, interest, or imagination, of:

　　arrest , catch up , fascinate , grip, hold, mesmerize, rivet, spellbind , transfix. Slang : grab .

　　See EXCITE.
