  646. Inflict verb

  [VN] ~ sth (on / upon sb/sth) to make sb/sth suffer sth unpleasant: They inflicted a

  humiliating defeat on the home team. ◆ They surveyed the damage inflicted by the storm. ◆

  Heavy casualties were inflicted on the enemy. ◆ The rodent's sharp teeth can inflict a nasty

  bite. ◆ (humorous) Do you have to inflict that music on us?

  647. Distort verb[VN]

  to change the shape, appearance or sound of sth so that it is strange or not clear: a

  fairground mirror that distorts your shape ◆ The loudspeaker seemed to distort his voice.

  to twist or change facts, ideas, etc. so that they are no longer correct or true: Newspapers

  are often guilty of distorting the truth. ◆ The article gave a distorted picture of his childhood.

  648. Abuse verb[VN]

  to make bad use of sth, or to use so much of sth that it harms your health: to abuse alcohol

  / drugs ◆ He systematically abused his body with heroin and cocaine.

  to use power or knowledge unfairly or wrongly: She abused her position as principal by

  giving jobs to her friends. ◆ He felt they had abused his trust by talking about him to the

  press (= deceived him, although he had trusted them).

  to treat a person or an animal in a cruel or violent way, especially sexually: All the children

  had been physically and emotionally abused. ◆ He had abused his own daughter (= had sex

  with her). ◆ The boy had been viciously assaulted and sexually abused.

  to make rude or offensive remarks to or about sb: Journalists covering the case have been

  threatened and abused.

  649. Modify verb(modifies, modifying, modified, modified) [VN]

  to change sth slightly, especially in order to make it more suitable for a particular purpose

  Synonym: ADAPT

  The office software has been modified over the years. ◆ Patients are taught how to modify

  their diet. ◆ We found it cheaper to modify existing equipment rather than buy new.

  CHANGE

  to make sth less extreme: to modify your behaviour / language / views

  (grammar) a word, such as an adjective or adverb, that modifies another word or group of

  words describes it or restricts its meaning in some way: In 'walk slowly', the adverb 'slowly'

  modifies the verb 'walk'.

  650. Coax verb

  ~ sb (into doing sth)

  ~ sb (into / out of sth) to persuade sb to do sth by talking to them in a kind and gentle way:

  [VN] She coaxed the horse into coming a little closer. ◆ He was coaxed out of retirement to

  help the failing company. ◆ She had to coax the car along. ◆ Police managed to coax the

  man down from the ledge. ◆ [V speech] 'Nearly there,' she coaxed. [also VN speech]
