  686. Pierce verb

  ~ (through) sth to make a small hole in sth, or to go through sth, with a sharp object: [VN]

  The arrow pierced his shoulder. ◆ He pierced another hole in his belt with his knife. ◆ to have

  your ears / nose pierced (= to have a small hole made in your ears / nose so that you can

  wear jewellery there) ◆ (figurative) She was pierced to the heart with guilt. ◆ [V] The knife

  pierced through his coat.

  ~ (through) sth (literary) (of light, sound, etc.) to be suddenly seen or heard: [VN] Sirens

  pierced the silence of the night. ◆ Shafts of sunlight pierced the heavy mist. [also V]

  ~ (through) sth to force a way through a barrier: [VN] They failed to pierce the Liverpool

  defence. [also V]

  687. Survey verb[VN]

  to look carefully at the whole of sth, especially in order to get a general impression of it: The

  next morning we surveyed the damage caused by the fire. ◆ He surveyed himself in the

  mirror before going out. ◆ She opened her eyes and surveyed her surroundings.

  to study and give a general description of sth: This chapter briefly surveys the current state

  of European politics.

  to measure and record the features of an area of land, for example in order to make a map

  or in preparation for building

  (BrE) to examine a building to make sure it is in good condition: Have the house surveyed

  before you decide whether to buy it.

  to investigate the opinions or behaviour of a group of people by asking them a series of

  questions: We surveyed 500 smokers and found that over three quarters would like to give up.

  688. Scan verb(-nn-)

  [VN] ~ sth (for sth) to look at every part of sth carefully, especially because you are looking

  for a particular thing or person: He scanned the horizon for any sign of land. ◆ She scanned

  his face anxiously.

  ~ (through) sth (for sth) to look quickly but not very carefully at a document, etc: [VN] I

  scanned the list quickly for my name. ◆ [V] She scanned through the newspaper over

  breakfast.

  [VN] to get an image of an object, a part of sb's body, etc. on a computer by passing a

  beam of X-RAYS, ULTRASOUND waves or ELECTROMAGNETIC waves over it in a special

  machine: Their brains are scanned so that researchers can monitor the progress of the

  disease.

  [VN] (of a light, RADAR, etc.) to pass across an area: Concealed video cameras scan every

  part of the compound.

  [V](of poetry) to have a regular rhythm according to fixed rules: This line doesn't scan.

  689. Skim verb(-mm-)

  [VN] ~ (sth off / from) sth to remove fat, cream, etc. from the surface of a liquid: Skim the

  scum off the jam and let it cool. ◆ Skim the jam and let it cool.

  [no passive]~ (along / over, etc.) sth to move quickly and lightly over a surface, not

  touching it or only touching it occasionally; to make sth do this: [V] We watched the birds

  skimming over the lake. ◆ (figurative) His eyes skimmed over her face. ◆ [VN] The

  speedboat took off, skimming the waves. ◆ (figurative) This report has barely skimmed the

  surface of the subject. ◆ (BrE) Small boys were skimming stones across the water.

  points: [V] He skimmed through the article trying to find his name. ◆ [VN] I always skim the

  financial section of the newspaper.

  690. Spot verb (-tt-)

  (not used in the progressive tenses) to see or notice a person or thing, especially suddenly

  or when it is not easy to do so: [VN] I finally spotted my friend in the crowd. ◆ I've just

  spotted a mistake on the front cover. ◆ Can you spot the difference between these two

  pictures? ◆ Her modelling career began when she was spotted at the age of 14. ◆ Spotting

  the disease early can save lives. ◆ [VN -ing] Neighbours spotted smoke coming out of the

  house. ◆ [V that] No one spotted that the gun was a fake. ◆ [V wh-] I soon spotted what

  the mistake was.
