  691. Identify verb(identifies, identifying, identified, identified)

  (also informal ID) [VN] ~ sb/sth (as sb/sth) to recognize sb/sth and be able to say who or

  what they are: The bodies were identified as those of two suspected drug dealers. ◆ She was

  able to identify her attacker. ◆ Passengers were asked to identify their own suitcases before

  they were put on the plane. ◆ Many of those arrested refused to identify themselves (=

  would not say who they were). ◆ First of all we must identify the problem areas.

  to find or discover sb/sth: [VN] Scientists have identified a link between diet and cancer. ◆

  As yet they have not identified a buyer for the company. ◆ [V wh-] They are trying to

  identify what is wrong with the present system.

  [VN] ~ sb/sth (as sb/sth) to make it possible to recognize who or what sb/sth is: In many

  cases, the clothes people wear identify them as belonging to a particular social class.

  692. Scrutinize verb

  [VN] (written) to look at or examine sb/sth carefully: She leaned forward to scrutinize their

  faces. ◆ The statement was carefully scrutinized before publication.

  693. Reveal verb

  ~ sth (to sb) to make sth known to sb: [VN] to reveal a secret ◆ Details of the murder

  were revealed by the local paper. ◆ The doctors did not reveal the truth to him. ◆ Salted

  peanuts were recently revealed as the nation's favourite snack. ◆ Her expression revealed

  nothing. ◆ [V (that)] The report reveals (that) the company made a loss of £20 million last

  year. ◆ [VN (that)] It was revealed that important evidence had been suppressed. ◆ [V

  wh-] Officers could not reveal how he died. [also VN to inf]

  [VN]to show sth that previously could not be seen: He laughed, revealing a line of white

  teeth. ◆ The door opened to reveal a cosy little room. ◆ X-rays revealed a fracture. ◆ She

  crouched in the dark, too frightened to reveal herself.

  694. Transpire verb(formal)

  [V that](not usually used in the progressive tenses) if it transpires that sth has happened

  or is true, it is known or has been shown to be true: It transpired that the gang had had a

  contact inside the bank. ◆ This story, it later transpired, was untrue.

  [V]to happen: You're meeting him tomorrow? Let me know what transpires.

  [V, VN](biology) when plants or leaves transpire, water passes out from their surface

  695. Profess verb(formal)

  to claim that sth is true or correct, especially when it is not: [VN] She still professes her

  innocence. ◆ [V to inf] I don't profess to be an expert in this subject.

  to state openly that you have a particular belief, feeling, etc: [VN] He professed his

  admiration for their work. ◆ [VN-ADJ] She professed herself satisfied with the progress so

  far.

  [VN] to belong to a particular religion: to profess Christianity / Islam / Judaism
