  716. Deem verb

  (formal) (not usually used in the progressive tenses) to have a particular opinion about sth

  Synonym: CONSIDER

  [VN-N] The evening was deemed a great success. ◆ I deem it an honour to be invited. ◆

  [VN-ADJ] She deemed it prudent not to say anything. ◆ They would take any action deemed

  necessary. [also V (that), VN to inf]

  717. Vindicate verb[VN](formal)

  to prove that sth is true or that you were right to do sth, especially when other people

  thought differently

  Synonym: JUSTIFY

  Our fears of conflict were partially vindicated by today's events. ◆ I have every confidence

  that this decision will be fully vindicated.

  to prove that sb is not guilty when they have been accused of doing sth wrong or illegal:

  New evidence emerged, vindicating him completely.

  vindication noun [U, sing.]: Anti-nuclear protesters regarded the Chernobyl accident as a

  clear vindication of their campaign.

  718. Discern verb(not used in the progressive tenses) (formal)

  to know, recognize or understand sth, especially sth that is not obvious: [VN] It is possible

  to discern a number of different techniques in her work. ◆ He discerned a certain coldness in

  their welcome. ◆ [V wh-] It is often difficult to discern how widespread public support is.

  [VN] to see or hear sth, but not very clearly: We could just discern the house in the distance.

  discernible adjective: There is often no discernible difference between rival brands. ◆ His face

  was barely discernible in the gloom.

  719. Collapse verb

  of building

  [V]to fall down or fall in suddenly, often after breaking apart

  Synonym: GIVE WAY

  The roof collapsed under the weight of snow.

  of sick person

  [V] to fall down (and usually become unconscious), especially because you are very ill/sick:

  He collapsed in the street and died two hours later.

  relax

  [V](informal) to sit or lie down and relax, especially after working hard: When I get home I

  like to collapse on the sofa and listen to music.

  fail

  [V]to fail suddenly or completely

  to fold sth into a shape that uses less space; to be able to be folded in this way: [V] The

  flat and empty

  720. Crumble verb

  to break or break sth into very small pieces: [V] Rice flour makes the cake less likely to

  [V]if a building or piece of land is crumbling, parts of it are breaking off: buildings crumbling

  into dust ◆ crumbling stonework ◆ The cliff is gradually crumbling away. ◆ They live in a
