  721. Squash verb

  ~ sth (against sth) to press sth so that it becomes soft, damaged or flat, or changes shape:

  [VN] The tomatoes at the bottom of the bag had been squashed. ◆ He squashed his nose

  against the window. ◆ Move up-you're squashing me! ◆ [VN-ADJ] Squash your cans flat

  before recycling.

  [+adv./prep.]to push sb/sth or yourself into a space that is too small: [V] We all

  squashed into the back of the car. ◆ [VN] How many people are they going to try and squash

  into this bus? ◆ She was squashed between the door and the table. ◆ There were dozens of

  us in the room, squashed together like sardines.

  [VN] to stop sth from continuing; to destroy sth because it is a problem for you: to squash a

  plan / an idea / a revolt ◆ If parents don't answer children's questions, their natural curiosity

  will be squashed. ◆ The statement was an attempt to squash the rumours.

  722. Crash verb

  of vehicle

  ~ (sth) (into sth) if a vehicle crashes or the driver crashes it, it hits an object or another

  vehicle, causing damage: [V] I was terrified that the plane would crash. ◆ We're going to

  crash, aren't we? ◆ A truck went out of control and crashed into the back of a bus. ◆ [VN]

  He crashed his car into a wall.

  hit hard / loud noise

  to hit sth hard while moving, causing noise and/or damage; to make sth hit sb/sth in this

  way: [V, +adv./prep.] A brick crashed through the window. ◆ With a sweep of his hand he

  sent the glasses crashing to the floor. ◆ [V-ADJ] The door crashed open. ◆ [VN-ADJ] She

  stormed out of the room and crashed the door shut behind her.

  [V]to make a loud noise: Thunder crashed overhead.

  in finance / business

  [V](of prices, a business, shares, etc.) to lose value or fail suddenly and quickly: Share

  prices crashed to an all-time low yesterday. ◆ The company crashed with debts of £40 million.

  computing

  if a computer crashes or you crash a computer, it stops working suddenly: [V] Files can be

  lost if the system suddenly crashes. [also VN]

  party

  [VN] (informal) = GATECRASH

  in sport

  [V][usually +adv./prep.](especially BrE) to lose very badly in a sports game: The team

  crashed to their worst defeat this season.

  sleep

  [V]~ (out) (informal) to fall asleep; to sleep somewhere you do not usually sleep: I was so

  tired I crashed out on the sofa. ◆ I've come to crash on your floor for a couple of nights.

  medical

  723. Ravage verb

  [VN][usually passive]to badly damage sth: a country ravaged by civil war ◆ a recession

  that has ravaged the textile industry

  724. Raze verb

  [VN][usually passive]to completely destroy a building, town, etc. so that nothing is left:

  The village was razed to the ground. ◆ The woodland was razed by fire.

  725. Demolish verb[VN]

  to pull or knock down a building: The factory was demolished in 1980. ◆ The building will

  have to be demolished.

  to show that an idea or theory is completely wrong: A recent book has demolished this

  theory.

  to defeat sb easily and completely: They demolished New Zealand 226 in the final.

  (BrE, informal) to eat sth very quickly: The children demolished their burgers and chips.
