  726. Disfigure verb

  [VN] to spoil the appearance of a person, thing or place: Her face was disfigured by a long red

  scar. ◆ An ugly power station disfigures the landscape.

  disfigurement noun [U, C] : He suffered permanent disfigurement in the fire.

  727. Frustrate verb[VN]

  to make sb feel annoyed or impatient because they cannot do or achieve what they want:

  What frustrates him is that there's too little money to spend on the project.

  (written) to prevent sb from doing sth; to prevent sth from happening or succeeding: The

  rescue attempt was frustrated by bad weather. ◆ He tried to frustrate his political opponents

  by denying them access to the media.

  728. Smash verb

  break

  to break sth, or to be broken, violently and noisily into many pieces: [VN] Several windows

  had been smashed. ◆ He smashed the radio to pieces. ◆ [V] The glass bowl smashed into a

  hit very hard

  to move with a lot of force against sth solid; to make sth do this: [V, +adv./prep.] the

  smashed his fist down on the desk.

  [+adv./prep.]to hit sth very hard and break it, in order to get through it: [VN] They had

  [VN] to hit sth/sb very hard: He smashed the ball into the goal.

  destroy / defeat

  [VN] to destroy, defeat or put an end to sth/sb: Police say they have smashed a major drugs

  ring. ◆ She has smashed the world record (= broken it by a large amount).

  crash vehicle

  [VN] ~ sth (up) to crash a vehicle: He's smashed (up) his new car.

  in tennis, etc.

  [VN] to hit a high ball downwards and very hard over the net

  729. Devastate verb[VN]

  to completely destroy a place or an area: The bomb devastated much of the old part of the

  city.

  [often passive]to make sb feel very shocked and sad

  730. Disrupt verb

  [VN] to make it difficult for sth to continue in the normal way: Demonstrators succeeded in

  disrupting the meeting. ◆ Bus services will be disrupted tomorrow because of the bridge

  closure.

  disruption noun [U, C]: We aim to help you move house with minimum disruption to yourself.

  ◆ disruptions to rail services ◆ The strike caused serious disruptions for several days.
