  731. Mangle verb[VN][usually passive]

  to crush or twist sth so that it is badly damaged: His hand was mangled in the machine.

  to spoil sth, for example a poem or a piece of music, by saying it wrongly or playing it badly

  mangled adjective: mangled bodies / remains

  732. Spoil verb(spoiled, spoiled )

  [VN] to change sth good into sth bad, unpleasant, useless, etc.

  Synonym: RUIN

  Our camping trip was spoilt by bad weather. ◆ Don't let him spoil your evening. ◆ The tall

  buildings have spoiled the view. ◆ Don't eat too many nuts-you'll spoil your appetite (= will

  [V](of food) to become bad so that it can no longer be eaten

  733. Engulf verb[VN] (written)

  to surround or to cover sb/sth completely: He was engulfed by a crowd of reporters. ◆ The

  vehicle was engulfed in flames.

  to affect sb/sth very strongly: Fear engulfed her.

  734. Devour verb[VN]

  to eat all of sth quickly especially because you are very hungry: He devoured half of his

  burger in one bite.

  to read or look at sth with great interest and enthusiasm: She devoured everything she

  could lay her hands on:

  books, magazines and newspapers.

  (formal) to destroy sb/sth: Flames devoured the house.

  735. Crumple verb

  ~ (sth) (up) (into sth) to crush sth into folds; to become crushed into folds: [VN] She

  crumpled the letter up into a ball and threw it on the fire. ◆ [V] This material crumples very

  easily.

  [V]~ (up) if your face crumples, you look sad and disappointed, as if you might cry: Her

  face crumpled up and she burst into tears.

  [V]~ (up) to fall down in an uncontrolled way because you are injured, unconscious, drunk,

  etc.

  Synonym: COLLAPSE

  He crumpled up in agony.
