  766. Consider verb

  to think about sth carefully, especially in order to make a decision: [VN] She considered her

  options. ◆ Let us consider the facts. ◆ He was considering an appeal. ◆ a carefully

  considered response / decision ◆ The company is being actively considered as a potential

  partner (= it is thought possible that it could become one). ◆ [V -ing] We're considering

  buying a new car. ◆ You wouldn't consider marrying a man for his money, then? ◆ [V wh-]

  We need to consider how the law might be reformed. ◆ He was considering what to do next.

  ◆ [V] I'd like some time to consider.

  ~ sb/sth (as) sth to think of sb/sth in a particular way: [VN-N] This award is considered (to

  be) a great honour. ◆ He considers himself an expert on the subject. ◆ These workers are

  considered (as) a high-risk group. ◆ [VN-ADJ] Who do you consider (to be) responsible for

  the accident? ◆ Consider yourself lucky you weren't fired. ◆ [V (that)] She considers that it

  is too early to form a definite conclusion. ◆ The Home Secretary will release prisoners only if

  he considers it is safe to do so. ◆ [VN to inf] He's generally considered to have the finest

  tenor voice in the country. [also VN that]

  [VN] to think about sth, especially the feelings of other people, and be influenced by it when

  making a decision, etc: You should consider other people before you act.

  [VN] (formal) to look carefully at sb/sth: He stood there, considering the painting.

  767. Ruminate verb

  [V, V speech](formal) ~ (on / over / about sth) to think deeply about sth

  768. Speculate verb

  ~ (about / on sth) to form an opinion about sth without knowing all the details or facts: [V]

  We all speculated about the reasons for her resignation. ◆ They were all speculating as to the

  identity of the stranger. ◆ [V wh-] It is useless to speculate why he did it. ◆ [V that] We

  can speculate that the stone circles were used in some sort of pagan ceremony.

  [V]~ (in / on sth) to buy goods, property, shares, etc., hoping to make a profit when you

  sell them, but with the risk of losing money: He likes to speculate on the stock market.

  769. Ponder verb

  ~ (about / on / over sth) (written) to think about sth carefully for a period of time

  Synonym: CONSIDER

  [V]She pondered over his words. ◆ They were left to ponder on the implications of the

  announcement. ◆ [VN] The senator pondered the question for a moment. ◆ We intend to

  ponder all the alternatives before acting. ◆ [V wh-] They are pondering whether the money

  could be better used elsewhere. [also V speech]

  770. Elevate verb[VN]

  ~ sb/sth (to sth)

  ~ sth (into sth) (formal) to give sb/sth a higher position or rank, often more important than

  they deserve

  Synonym: RAISE, PROMOTE

  He elevated many of his friends to powerful positions within the government. ◆ It was an

  attempt to elevate football to a subject worthy of serious study.

  (technical or formal) to lift sth up or put sth in a higher position: It is important that the

  injured leg should be elevated.

  (technical) to make the level of sth increase: Smoking often elevates blood pressure.

  (formal) to improve a person's mood, so that they feel happy: The song never failed to

  elevate his spirits.
