  871. Highlight verb[VN]

  to emphasize sth, especially so that people give it more attention: The report highlights the

  major problems facing society today.

  to mark part of a text with a special coloured pen, or to mark an area on a computer screen,

  to emphasize it or make it easier to see: I've highlighted the important passages in yellow. ◆

  Highlight the section that you want to delete.

  to make some parts of your hair a lighter colour than the rest by using a chemical substance

  on them: I'm having my hair highlighted. ◆ The shampoo is ideal for permed or highlighted

  hair.

  872. Cite verb [VN] (formal)

  ~ sth (as sth) to mention sth as a reason or an example, or in order to support what you are

  saying: He cited his heavy workload as the reason for his breakdown.

  to speak or write the exact words from a book, an author, etc.

  Synonym: QUOTE

  She cited a passage from the President's speech.

  (law) to order sb to appear in a court of law; to name sb officially in a legal case: He was

  cited for contempt of court. ◆ She was cited in the divorce proceedings.

  ~ sb (for sth) to mention sb officially or publicly because they deserve special praise: He

  was cited for bravery in the Vietnam War.

  873. Reiterate verb

  (formal) to repeat sth that you have already said, especially to emphasize it: [VN] to reiterate

  an argument / a demand / an offer ◆ [V that] Let me reiterate that we are fully committed to

  this policy. [also V speech]

  874. Accentuate verb

  [VN] to emphasize sth or make it more noticeable: Her short hair accentuated her huge eyes.

  ◆ The fundamental patterns of inequality have remained and have been accentuated by the

  war.

  875. Reconcile verb[VN]

  ~ sth (with sth) to find a satisfactory way of dealing with two or more ideas, needs, etc. that

  seem to be opposed to each other: an attempt to reconcile the need for industrial

  development with concern for the environment ◆ It was hard to reconcile his career

  ambitions with the needs of his children.

  [usually passive]~ sb (with sb) to make people become friends again after an argument

  or a disagreement: The pair were reconciled after Jackson made a public apology. ◆ He has

  recently been reconciled with his wife.

  ~ sb / yourself (to sth) to make sb/yourself accept an unpleasant situation because it is not

  possible to change it: He could not reconcile himself to the prospect of losing her.
