　　The author argues that the Apogee Company should close down its field offices and conduct all its operations from a single location to improve profitability. In supportive this conclusion, the author argues that centralization would improve profitability by cutting costs and helping the company main supervision of all employees. Furthermore, the author also cites that the company was more profitable back to the time when it had all operations in one location. At first glance, the argument appears to be somewhat convincing, but close scrutiny reveals several logic flaws in the assumptions which the argument is based upon.

　　First of all, the author assumes that centralization would cut costs and thus help maintain supervision of employees. There is no guarantee that this would be the case. This assumption fails to take into account cost increases and inefficiency that could result from centralization. For instance, the company would need to spend more on traveling to server its customers formerly served by its field office, creating travel cost and loss of critical time. The author ignores other factors that can actually increase the costs. Without further evidence the claim that centralization will cut costs is groundless.

　　Furthermore, the author argues that the Apogee Company was more profitable when it was centralized than it is today, thus it should adopt the strategy towards more centralization of the company. The author commits the fallacy of assuming that just because one event (centralization) occurs before the other (being more profitable), the second event has been caused by the first. Is centralization the only difference relevant to greater past profitability? It is entirely possible that the fact that Apogee is less profitable today is because of lousy management, bad marketing strategy, or poor product quality. Unless all these relevant factors are ruled out, the author's argument is not convincing.

　　The author's conclusion is not compelling as it stands. It is imprudent for the author to claim that centralization will cut costs and improve profitability for the company. To strengthen the argument, the author would need to provide more solid evidence to show that centralization will result in costs reduction. In addition, the author should find out other factors that pose negative impact on the profitability today and address those issues.
