  931. Advance verb

  move forward

  [V]~ (on / towards sb/sth) to move forward towards sb/sth, often in order to attack or

  given the order to advance. ◆ They had advanced 20 miles by nightfall. ◆ the advancing

  Allied troops ◆ She closed the door firmly and advanced towards the desk.

  if knowledge, technology, etc. advances, it develops and improves: [V] Our knowledge of

  the disease has advanced considerably over recent years. ◆ [VN] This research has done

  933. Sever verb[VN] (formal)

  to completely end a relationship or all communication with sb: The two countries have

  severed all diplomatic links. ◆ to sever relations / ties / connections ◆ She has severed all

  contact with her family.

  934. Segregate verb[VN]

  ~ sb (from sb) to separate people of different races, religions or sexes and treat them

  differently: a culture in which women are segregated from men ◆ Whites and blacks were

  segregated into different parts of town. ◆ a racially segregated community ◆ a segregated

  school (= one for students of one race or religion only)

  Antonym: INTEGRATE
