　　936. Scatter verb

　　[VN] ~ sth (on / over / around sth)

　　~ sth (with sth) to throw or drop things in different directions so that they cover an area of

　　ground: Scatter the grass seed over the lawn. ◆ Scatter the lawn with grass seed. ◆ They

　　scattered his ashes at sea.

　　to move or to make people or animals move very quickly in different directions: [V] At the

　　first gunshot, the crowd scattered. ◆ [VN] The explosion scattered a flock of birds roosting in

　　the trees.

　　937. Soothe verb[VN]

　　to make sb who is anxious, upset, etc. feel calmer: The music soothed her for a while.

　　to make a tense or painful part of your body feel more comfortable: This should soothe the

　　pain. ◆ Take a warm bath to soothe tense, tired muscles.

　　soothing adjective: a soothing voice / lotion

　　soothingly adverb: 'There's no need to worry,' he said soothingly.

　　938. Placate verb

　　[VN] to make sb feel less angry about sth

　　Synonym: PACIFY

　　a placating smile ◆ The concessions did little to placate the students.

　　939. Console verb

　　~ sb / yourself (with sth) to give comfort or sympathy to sb who is unhappy or disappointed:

　　[VN] Nothing could console him when his wife died. ◆ She put a consoling arm around his

　　shoulders. ◆ Console yourself with the thought that you did your best. ◆ [VN that] I didn't

　　like lying but I consoled myself that it was for a good cause. ◆ [VN speech] 'Never mind,'

　　Anne consoled her.

　　940. Assuage verb

　　[VN] (formal) to make an unpleasant feeling less severe: His reply did little to assuage my

　　suspicions. ◆ to assuage your guilt / fears
