　　961. Hike verb

　　to go for a long walk in the country, especially for pleasure: [V] strong boots for hiking over

　　rough country ◆ [VN] (AmE) to hike the Rockies

　　[V] (go hiking) to spend time hiking for pleasure: If the weather's fine, we'll go hiking this

　　weekend.

　　[VN] ~ sth (up) to increase prices, taxes, etc. suddenly by large amounts: The government

　　hiked up the price of milk by over 40%.

　　962. Amplify verb(amplifies, amplifying, amplified, amplified)

　　[VN] to increase sth in strength, especially sound: to amplify a guitar / an electric current /

　　a signal

　　(formal) to add details to a story, statement, etc: [V] She refused to amplify further. ◆ [VN]

　　You may need to amplify this point.

　　963. Slant verb

　　[+adv./prep.] to slope or to make sth slope in a particular direction or at a particular angle:

　　[V] (literary) The sun slanted through the window. ◆ [VN] Slant your skis a little more to the

　　left.

　　[VN] (sometimes disapproving) to present information from a particular point of view,

　　especially in an unfair way: The findings of the report had been slanted in favour of the

　　manufacturers.

　　964. Protrude verb

　　[V]~ (from sth) (formal) to stick out from a place or a surface: protruding eyes / teeth ◆ His

　　stomach protruded slightly. ◆ He hung his coat on a nail protruding from the wall.

　　965. rotate verb

　　~ (about / around sth) to move or turn around a central fixed point; to make sth do this: [V]

　　Stay well away from the helicopter when its blades start to rotate. ◆ winds rotating around

　　the eye of a hurricane ◆ [VN] Rotate the wheel through 180 degrees.

　　if a job rotates, or if people rotate a job, they regularly change the job or regularly change

　　who does the job: [V] The EU presidency rotates among the members. ◆ When I joined the

　　company, I rotated around the different sections. ◆ [VN] We rotate the night shift so no one

　　has to do it all the time.
