　　976. Tempt

　　to attract sb or make sb want to do or have sth, even if they know it is wrong: [VN] I was

　　tempted by the dessert menu. ◆ Don't tempt thieves by leaving valuables clearly visible. ◆

　　[VN to inf] I was tempted to take the day off.

　　to persuade or try to persuade sb to do sth that you want them to do, for example by

　　offering them sth: [VN] How can we tempt young people into engineering? ◆ [VN to inf]

　　Nothing would tempt me to live here.

　　977. Emaciate

　　to cause to grow excessively thin; to cause to waste away : Starvation emaciates the body.

　　978. Lurk verb[V]

　　[usually +adv./prep.]to wait somewhere secretly, especially because you are going to do

　　sth bad or illegal: Why are you lurking around outside my house? ◆ A crocodile was lurking

　　just below the surface.

　　when sth unpleasant or dangerous lurks, it is present but not in an obvious way: At night,

　　danger lurks in these streets. ◆ a lurking doubt / suspicion

　　979. Sneak verb

　　Help Note:The usual past form is sneaked, but snuck is now very common in informal speech

　　in AmE and some people use it in BrE too. However, many people consider it incorrect and it

　　should not be used in formal writing.

　　[V +adv./prep.]to go somewhere secretly, trying to avoid being seen: What are you doing

　　sneaking around out there? ◆ Did you sneak into my room while I was asleep?

　　to do sth or take sb/sth somewhere secretly, often without permission: [VN] We sneaked a

　　look at her private diary. ◆ I was caught sneaking my kitten into the school. ◆ At last we

　　were able to sneak a moment alone together. ◆ [VN, VNN] I managed to sneak a note to

　　him. ◆ I managed to sneak him a note.

　　[VN] (informal) to secretly take sth small or unimportant: I sneaked a cake when they were

　　out of the room.

　　[V]~ (on sb) (to sb) (old-fashioned, BrE, disapproving) to tell an adult that another child

　　has done sth wrong, especially in order to cause trouble

　　980. Feign verb

　　(written) to pretend that you have a particular feeling or that you are ill, tired, etc: [VN] He

　　survived the massacre by feigning death. ◆ 'Who cares?' said Alex, feigning indifference. ◆ 'A

　　present for me?' she asked with feigned surprise. [also V to inf]
